Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday hit out at the NDA government for creating an unnecessary controversy surrounding the cremation and memorial arrangements for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Gehlot asserted that the BJP government only announced plans for a memorial due to public pressure.
Manmohan Singh, renowned as the architect of India’s economic reforms, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday night at the age of 92.
“The NDA government has instigated an unnecessary controversy over the cremation and memorial of a distinguished figure like Dr. Manmohan Singh,” Gehlot expressed on X. He continued, “The citizens of the country have shown their displeasure with the government’s actions, prompting the BJP to declare plans for a memorial in response to public sentiment.”
Gehlot lamented that the Government of India was conducting the cremation of such a respected leader at Nigam Bodh Ghat rather than at a more prestigious location.
He referenced the previous practices of the Congress government, stating, “In 2010, after the demise of former Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Congress government, without any request from the BJP, reached out to his family and promptly designated a special site in Jaipur for his last rites, followed by the establishment of a memorial.”
He also mentioned that following the death of Bal Thackeray in Maharashtra in 2012, the Congress government allocated a prominent location in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park for his final rites.
Gehlot concluded by noting that while Congress has consistently honored leaders from all political backgrounds with respect, the BJP’s treatment of Manmohan Singh is unfortunate.
Manmohan Singh’s mortal remains arrived at Delhi’s Nighambodh Ghat crematorium for last rites on Saturday. The procession reached the crematorium at approximately 11:30 a.m., where the final ceremonies took place.
Dr. Singh’s funeral was attended by President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge. His body was taken to the Congress headquarters in New Delhi earlier in the day for public homage before being transported to the cremation ground.
