Modi condemns killing in the name of cow protection

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve of, says PM
Breaking his silence on recent cow protection related violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that killing in the name of protecting the cow is not acceptable. Speaking at the inauguration of the Sabarmati centenary celebrations in Ahmedabad, Modi warned, “Killing people in the name of gau bhakti is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve of.”
“No person in this nation has the right to take the law in his or her own hands in this country,” Modi said.
Modi also used the occasion to call upon citizens to come together and create the India of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams.
“Let’s all work together. Let’s create the India of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams. Let’s create an India our freedom fighters would be proud of,” the prime minister said.
The Opposition has termed his remarks as hollow saying that no action was visible after he lashed out at fake cow vigilantes in August last year.
The prime minister’s remark comes amidst growing incidents of mob lynching incidents. A Muslim youth was last week killed on board a Mathura-bound train by people who taunted his family and repeatedly called them “anti-nationals” and “beef eaters”.
On Wednesday, protests were held in several cities across India under the banner of #NotInMyName to protest attacks by cow vigilantes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Supreme Court to hear pleas seeking CBI probe into 2020 Palghar mob lynching case
The Supreme Court will hear a slew of pleas requesting a CBI probe into the April 2020 Palghar mob lynching case.

The Supreme Court will hear a slew of pleas requesting a CBI probe into the April 2020 Palghar mob lynching case. On Monday, the top court agreed to hearing the requests after being apprised that the Maharashtra government has consented to the investigation by the federal agency.
A petitioner informed an apex court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala that the Maharashtra government has accorded consent to a CBI investigation into the alleged lynching of three people by a mob in the state’s Palghar district in April 2020.
A lawyer representing the petitioners said the case can be heard and of on any Friday or Monday.
In a turn of events, the Maharashtra government had earlier told the Supreme Court that it was ready to hand over to the CBI the investigation into the Palghar mob lynching case.
The Eknath Shinde-led government had earlier in its affidavit told the top court that “delinquent” policemen have been punished by the Maharashtra Police for dereliction of duties in the alleged killing of three people by a mob, including two seers.

The state government had also sought dismissal of petitions— including a plea by seers of Shri Panch Dashban Juna Akhara and relatives of the victims—seeking an investigation into the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Other petitions into the case have been filed by Shashank Shekhar Jha and Ghanshyam Upadhyay.
The pleas have accused that the Maharashtra Police’s investigation was biased in favour of the policemen who were allegedly standing by when the allegedly lynching took place.
On the night April 16, 2020, three people travelling in a car from Mumbai’s Kandivali, were intercepted and allegedly assaulted by a mob in Gadchinchile village in the presence of the police, leading to their deaths.
The three victims—identified as 70-year-old Chikne Maharaj Kalpavrukshagiri, 35-year-old Sushil Giri Maharaj and the driver of the vehicle Nilesh Telgade (30)— were reportedly on their way to attend a funeral in Gujarat’s Surat when the incident happened.
