Rise in prices of food items hit common man’s budget

While the notable increase in tomato prices due to insufficient supply caused by rainfall is receiving widespread attention, official government statistics reveal that prices of other key food items, except for potatoes, have also witnessed significant hikes. The Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs informed the Parliament this week that Tur dal prices saw the highest surge at 28%, followed by rice (10.5%), urad dal, and atta (both at 8%) over the past year.

As of Thursday, the average retail price of rice stood at Rs 41 per kg, compared to Rs 37 a year earlier. The ministry attributed the rise in tur dal prices to a decline in domestic production. It pointed out that the third advanced estimate from the Ministry of Agriculture for the 2022-23 crop year projected tur dal production at 34.3 lakh tonnes, a decrease from the 42.2 lakh tonnes produced in the previous crop year.

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry’s price monitoring cell, the average retail price of potatoes is around 12% lower than last year, while onion prices have increased by approximately 5% over the past year. Regarding tomato prices, the ministry explained that the recent increase is due to a combination of factors such as seasonal crop patterns, the prevalence of white fly disease in Kolar, sudden onset of monsoon rains in the northern region impacting tomato crops in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and logistical disruptions in certain areas caused by heavy rainfall.

Government data illustrates that the average price of tomatoes on Thursday was Rs 140 per kilo, in contrast to Rs 34 the previous year. The highest recorded tomato price was Rs 257 per kg in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, while it was being sold at Rs 213 in Delhi and Rs 157 per kilo in Mumbai. The exorbitant cost of tomatoes has left residents infuriated, with prices of the vegetable soaring to as high as Rs 300 per kilogram in Dehradun.
