Congress scion Rahul Gandhi, who was disqualified as MP after being sentenced in a criminal defamation case, will reportedly vacate his official bungalow at 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow to the Lok Sabha secretariat today.
According to reports, the former Wayanad MP, who was asked to vacate the premises by April 22 as he’s no longer a member of either house of the Parliament, has already moved all his belongings from the bungalow and will likely hand it over today.
As per sources, Rahul Gandhi, who on April 14 had shifted his office and also moved some personal belongings from the 12 Tughlaq Lane bungalow to his mother Sonia Gandhi’s official residence, moved the rest of his belongings from the premises on Friday evening.
After shifting his office, Rahul Gandhi started living with his mother Sonia Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence, as per sources.
Reports said a truck was seen coming out of the bungalow on Friday evening, reportedly containing the former Congress chief’s items.
On March 23, a magistrate court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted the Congress leader in a criminal defamation case over his 2019 “Modi surname” remark and sentenced him to two years in jail. The conviction led to his disqualification from the Lok Sabha and losing his MP status.
After being disqualified from the House, Gandhi was asked to vacate the official bungalow allotted to him as the MP by April 22. He has been living in bungalow for nearly two decades.
Reports quoting sources said that Rahul Gandhi has been hunting for a space to set up his independent office.
On Thursday, a sessions court dismissed Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay to his conviction in the defamation case.
Dismissing the Gandhi scion’s plea Justice Mogera said that Rahul Gandhi failed to demonstrate that by not staying the conviction and denying an opportunity to contest the election, an irreversible and irrevocable damage will be caused to him.
The Congress has said it will challenge Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the Gujarat High Court next week.
