Mass grave

The increasing water level in Ganga and the advancement of monsoon in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj town have led to the mass graves float in Ganga, reviving the haunting images of floating dead bodies in the river. The mass graves, suspected to be of Covid patients have been floating on the river bank as the water level has risen up crumbled the sandbanks.

The bodies have posed another challenge for the authorities who are working overtime to take out the dead bodies and cremate them. Local journalists have taken pictures and videos of the body floating on several Ganga ghat and the authorities have been fishing out the bodies for the last two days.

Niraj Kumar Singh, a zonal officer for the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, told the media he had cremated 40 bodies in the last 24 hours. We are creating all bodies individually and following all rituals, Singh said in an interview.

You can see that the person was ill, and the family dumped the person here and went away. Maybe they were scared, I cannot say, Singh said. Not all the bodies were decomposed. The condition of some indicated they were freshly buried, he added.

Prayagraj’s Mayor Abhilasha Gupta Nandi told the media that the state had a long tradition of burial by many communities. While bodies buried in the mud are dissolved the sandbanks tend to preserve them. Wherever we find exposed bodies because of the spate in the river, we are carrying out cremations, she said.

Meanwhile, Congress slammed the Yogi Adityanath government, saying front page newspaper ads congratulating the Yogi government for its covid management should be shown side by side with horrific images of bodies floating in the Ganga.

Almost 100 unidentified dead bodies were found floating in Ganga in May. 71 dead bodies were fished out in Bihar’s Buxar district, almost 25 dead bodies belonged to Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district. Just days after dead bodies of suspected Covid-19 patients were seen floating on the banks of River Ganga in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, fresh reports of multiple bodies buried under the sand emerged from UP’s Unnao district.

The visuals generated immense outrage. It was suspected that the deaths were due to Covid, and the fatalities were being under-reported by the state. However, the Uttar Pradesh government denied that the deaths were linked to the pandemic and claimed that burial by the river is a long-standing tradition.

He added that the Bihar government should have given a report card that Nitish Kumar ruled the state fr 18 years and Lalu Yadav ruled the state for 15 years but they did not develop the state.

Earlier today Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he plans to call all nine parties that are part of the ruling coalition, including Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, to discuss next steps, which could include dealing with decisions to increase OBC quotas at 27 per cent.

Reports said that around 2.64 lakh enumerators fanned out across the state, documenting the details of 29 million registered households on 17 socio-economic criteria, ranging from employment, education, marital status, land holding and property ownership and caste.
