Tejashwi Yadav says PM Modi insulted Nitish Kumar by not responding to his letter on caste-based census

Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Yadav has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday demanding a caste-based census and reconsidering the issue. Yadav also alleged that PM Modi has insulted Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by not meeting him and responding to his letter on the issue, while he is meeting the Chief Ministers of other states. Earlier, the Bihar CM had written to the PM requesting him to hold a meeting for discussion on caste-based census.
Taking a jibe at the CM, Yadav said it was an insult to the chief minister of the state, which has given 39 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats to the BJP-led NDA alliance. Despite this, the PM has not given him an appointment. He said that the Center should take immediate steps to fill up about 50 per cent vacancies in government jobs for people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Yadav’s comment came days after the Chief Minister himself said he had not received any response to his letter, received by the Prime Minister’s Office on August 4, seeking to meet PM Modi.
Prime Minister’s Twitter handle says he has time to meet others, but if he is not able to meet Nitish Kumar and a delegation of the entire leadership of Bihar Assembly on such an important issue. Can’t say much, but he should have made time by now, he said in the letter.
The RJD leader said without knowing the numbers, development plans cannot be made. He said that the Bihar government has passed a resolution on this issue twice in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and sent it to the Central Government. Now the government has written a letter to PM Modi regarding the caste census, requesting an appointment.
Yadav said the party would be forced to resort to agitation and hit the streets if the central government did not pay heed to their demands. The party will be left with no option but to sit on dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, he said. The RJD leader said that the states were unable to formulate a policy for poverty alleviation of the poverty-stricken people as they did not have their detailed account.
Fresh demands for a caste-based Census have been triggered by a statement by the Centre in Parliament recently that an exercise to ascertain the population of only Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was under consideration.
