Man duped lakhs

A man in Thane city of Maharashtra was conned to the tune of nearly Rs 5 lakh while searching online for a way to get refunds for his cancelled plane tickets to Kenya, police said on Wednesday.

According to the police, the man had booked return tickets to Kenyan capital Nairobi for April 29 and May 5 and paid Rs 1.46 lakh for them as he wanted to visit the African nation’s Mombasa city with his friend.

However, his plans changed and he decided to cancel the tickets and seek a refund.

An official, citing the man’s complaint, said that on April 11, he went to the airline’s website and filled out a form seeking a refund. However, unable to connect to the airline’s helpline number, the complainant ran a search on Google and found a number which he thought was the airline’s helpline contact number.

Upon connecting with the number, he was told that airline’s technical team would get in touch with him and facilitate the refund, and later a man told the complainant that he would get a refund of Rs 1.28 lakh if he downloaded an app.

The official said that the victim downloaded the malicious app through which attackers got complete access to his mobile phone and stole Rs 4.8 lakh from his bank accounts.

In a similar incident, cyber criminals embezzled more than Rs 12 lakh from a woman in Thane city in March.

According to an official, the 36-year-old victim told the police in her complaint that one of the accused—a man claiming to be a Malaysian national working in the United Kingdom— befriended her on social media in November last year and told the victim that he had sent her a gift from the UK asking her to collect the same.

After a few days, the victim received a call from a woman posing as a customs official in Delhi who informed the complainant that she would have to pay some money to get the gift parcel released from the customs and that her friend had also sent her some foreign currency, the official revealed.

Giving further details, the official said the fake customs official asked her to pay some money to receive the foreign currency and the gift and eventually ended up paying Rs 12.47 lakh in several bank transactions from time to time but never received the gift.
