Rajya Sabha deputy chief Harivansh meets suspended Opposition MP

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh on Tuesday met the 8 suspended

Rajya Sabha members who are on a dharna on the lawns of Parliament after their suspension from the House for a week. Harivansh offered tea and snacks to the protesting members and spent some time with them. One of the protesting MPs told reporters it felt good to see Harivansh came to meet them as a colleague and not as Deputy Chairman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Harivansh for offering tea to suspended Opposition MPs. The PM tweeted that serving tea to those who attacked and insulted him a few days ago as well as created chaos in the House, this gesture shows that Harivansh Ji has been blessed with a humble mind and a big heart.

Modi said in his tweet that for centuries, Bihar has been teaching the values of democracy and Harivansh’s inspiring and statesman-like conduct this morning will make every lover of democracy proud.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu had on Monday suspended the eight members for their unruly behavior on the previous day. Naidu had criticized the behavior and had said it constituted an insult to parliamentary protocol. The suspended members include Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen, AAP’s Sanjay Singh, Congress MPs Rajeev Satav, Syed Naseer Hussain and Ripun Bora, and CPI(M) members K.K. Ragesh and Elamaram Kareem.

With the election campaign for the Bihar Assembly election launched virtually by almost all parties of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the PM’s hat-tip to Harivansh, who is a Janata Dal (United) member, is also an admission that the Sunday Rajya Sabha uproar can be spun to suit the NDA’s campaign rhetoric. The BJP in Bihar has already focused its attention on the death case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput invoking Bihari pride.

Harivansh also announced a 24-hour fast, hoping it inspires a feeling of self-purification among protesting Opposition MPs.

Meanwhile, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday also declared he’s going on a day’s fast in support of the suspended Rajya Sabha MPs and in protest against the conduct of Harivansh. The entire Opposition has boycotted the House today calling for the revocation of the suspensions and the government’s key bills in banking and other sectors were passed without any question.

Former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), fell at home and was taken to the hospital in Hyderabad this morning at around 2 a.m.

The 69-year-old may need surgery since doctors believe he may have injured his hip following the fall. At around two in the morning on Friday, he was taken to the Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad. Since losing the state assembly elections three days ago, the former chief minister has been hosting meetings at his house.

According to local reports, the former chief minister will undergo some tests today. KCR is in stable health as of right now.

BRS MLC K Kavitha posted on X with an update on KCR’s condition, stating that he is receiving professional medical care at the hospital right now.

Meanwhile, KCR held the position of Chief Minister of Telangana from 2014 till 2023, following his party Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)’s loss by the Congress in the recently held Assembly Elections.

In the Telangana election, KCR stood for two seats; he won the Gajwel seat but lost to Kamareddy. He was beaten from the Kamareddy seat by Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy of the BJP, who also defeated KCR and Revanth Reddy.

Revanth Reddy, a member of the Congress, and eleven other ministers were sworn in as Telangana’s chief minister yesterday.

In the 119-member Telangana assembly, the Congress secured 64 seats, while the BRS managed to secure just 39. This was the first loss for BRS since Telangana was created in 2014.

During the lengthy poll campaign, the party attempted to draw attention to all of its programmes for the underprivileged. Nevertheless, the execution of certain programmes had granted MLAs an excessive degree of authority to determine how to allocate monies, giving rise to accusations of both corruption and prejudice.

Despite KCR’s warnings to these MLAs to get a grip and step up their game, all of them received election tickets. As a result, the Congress was awarded the majority of these seats.

Many posts on the internet are witness to the fact that the country has to go a long way to make several public places, transport and other amenities accessible for people with disabilities. A 32-year-old disability rights activist’s recent is one such reminder of the lack of facilities.

Viral Modi, an activist as well as a motivational speaker faced a distressing situation on an Indigo flight from Delhi to Mumbai. Despite her paralyses from the waist down since 2006 and reliance on a wheelchair, she was left forgotten by the cabin crew after landing. The oversight led to her having to alert the housekeeping staff for assistance to deplane. This was followed by a 40 minute wait for an aisle wheelchair after all the passengers had left.

Virali’s said that the call button, which is used to ask for help was out of her reach and despite her prior notification about her need for a wheel chair at the gate, the airline failed to provide one. She added the helper who eventually came to assistant was negligent, pushing the aisle chair despite her stiff legs and failing to ensure her personal wheelchair was brought to the baggage claim area promptly. This resulted in  an additional 30 minute delay for Virali while her fellow passengers departed.

The situation took a more personal turn when Virali discovered that the cushion for her wheelchair, which had been made custom made to support her spine and prevent sores during long hours of sitting was missing. This loss was particularly distressing as it occurred shortly after the international day of persons with disabilities on December 3. She highlighted the irony of her experience with the airline.
