VK Sasikala, the close aide of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, has written to the prison authorities in Bengaluru, requesting them not to disclose details related to her imprisonment or the date of her release to third party RTI applicants.

In a letter dated September 19,  Sasikala cited the Supreme Court’s view that the right to privacy is a fundamental right and revealing her imprisonment details may lead to invasion of her privacy. She said these third party applicants want to ‘complicate her lawful release.’ “The oblique motive of some applicants is to complicate my lawful release at the right time,” the letter to the Parappana Agrahara Prison Chief Superintendent read.

To back her request, Sasikala also cited cases where jail authorities denied information on undertrial prisoners as well as convicts. Sasikala wrote to the prison superintendent days after the prison officials’ response to an RTI query, mentioning her date of release as January 27, 2021. Former AIADMK leader Sasikala Natarajan is serving 4 years jail term after her conviction in a disproportionate assets case.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government of E. Palaniswami has been on the tenterhooks as the party edges into one more year before elections are due in 2021. Former chief minister O. Paneerselvam has been pushing to be named the party’s CM candidate, which has not been accepted by the CM’s camp. Sasikala’s release could reinvigorate the party cadre ahead of the election which is being seen as one the rival DMK is sure to win, with other things remaining the same. Observers say that Sasikala can unite the AIADMK factions but were doubtful if the Tamil Nadu voters will vote for her given the huge amount of negative propaganda against her.
