Dhanteras 2021

Diwali is around the corner and the preparations to buy stuff for your home are also in full swing. The first day of the five-day festivities is Dhanteras on which people usually buy precious metals to please Goddess Lakshmi. Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali and is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin.

On the auspicious day of Dhanteras, it is a tradition in most Hindu families to buy precious metals but sometimes it gets hard on the pocket. The reason why people prefer buying ‘big’ items on this day is that they believe purchasing those items yields good luck in matters of both wealth and prosperity. Other than just going for gold and silver, you can also purchase the following items that will help in bringing health, wealth and prosperity to your house.

Dhanteras 2021: Buy these 5 auspicious items on this day
  • Broomstick
Buying a broomstick on the occasion of Dhanteras and using it in the house to sweep on that day represents the act of getting rid of any financial troubles from your house as well as any sort of misery, diseases and health problems. As per Hindu belief, the broomstick is associated with Goddess Lakshmi and removes negative forces.
  • Utensils
Utensils are considered a sign of prosperity and wealth if we bring them on this auspicious day. But make sure to buy kitchen essentials that are made up of either brass, silver or copper. Do avoid anything made from iron or steel. It is also believed that we should not bring empty utensils at home according to popular belief. So before you step into the house with your newly shopped items, fill them with food or water.
  • Gomti Chakras
The Gomti Chakra is a rare sea snail that can only be found in the Gomti River. It is regarded sacred in Hindu beliefs and can be used in Diwali puja. According to the legends, Lord Vishnu himself bestowed the Gomti chakras to Goddess Laxmi. Buying them on Dhanteras will delight Goddess Laxmi while also ensuring a constant supply of blessings from Lord Vishnu and the goddess of prosperity herself. Gomti Chakras are also intended to safeguard wealth by warding off the evil eye and resolving financial problems.

  • Business-related Work
If you’ve been thinking of starting a new business, opening a store or office, or simply opening a bank account, Dhanteras is considered a favourable ocassion. On this day, many devotees open new shops and offices and do Lakshmi puja to bring good luck, wealth and prosperity.

Apart from steel and iron utensils, there are a few things you should avoid purchasing. Knives, scissors, and pins should not be purchased. Also, avoid purchasing anything made of ceramics or glass. We do have to buy ghee and other oil-related items for the oil lamps during Diwali, but we must be careful not to buy anything that has been tampered with. Avoid buying items in black colour as well as objects made up of plastic.
