Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said that US pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Moderna have refused to sell their coronavirus vaccines to the national capital.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said that US pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Moderna have refused to sell their coronavirus vaccines to the national capital.
Pfizer and Moderna told the Delhi government that they will deal with the Centre directly. Therefore, the Delhi chief minister requested the central government to import vaccines and distribute it to states.
We’ve spoken to Pfizer, Moderna for vaccines, and both the companies have refused to sell vaccines directly to us. They have said that they will deal with the Government of India alone. Appeal to the Centre to import vaccines and distribute to the states, Kejriwal told reporters.
Due to shortage of vaccines in Delhi, the government had to shut some vaccination centres after it ran out of jabs and had to suspend vaccinations for those between 18 and 44 years for some time.
Vaccine stock for this category has been consumed. Due to this, vaccination centres for the youth have been shut. Only a few vaccines are available at some centres which will be over by today, Kejriwal said.
Earlier, the Punjab government had also made similar claims. It said Moderna had refused to sell vaccines to Punjab directly. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had reached out to all such manufacturers, according to officials, looking for direct purchases.
Punjab government’s Nodal Officer for vaccination Vikas Garg has said that the US vaccine makers have written to them, saying that as a part of their policy, they do not deal directly with states or private parties. They only deal with the Government of India.
As the country faces an acute shortage in Covid-19 vaccine supply, many states including the BMC have floated similar tenders to vaccine manufacturers all over the world.
Meanwhile, lockdown in Delhi has been extended for the sixth straight week. despite the city seeing a positivity rate dropping to less than 2.5 per cent. The national capital saw 1,649 new cases on Sunday.
