On the final day of the winter Session in Bihar Assembly, ruckus led by the Bharatiya Janata Party broke out as the BJP leaders started a commotion over the Bihar Hooch Tragedy in which more than 82 fatalities were recorded due to the consumption of spurious liquor.
According to reports, the session only could last for 30 minutes at 11 am before the Bihar Assembly speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary postponed it till 2 pm. The decision for adjournment was largely influenced by the leader of the opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha’s to make a statement on the floor of the house in order to diffuse the tension in the house on the issue.
Vijay Kumar Sinha read out an adjournment motion which sought for compensation of the victims who fell victim to the hooch tragedy. Sinha also claimed the numbers to be more than 100.
Sinha in his statement also highlighted and cited that a provision in the prohibition law wherein the ex gratia was paid despite the state practicing the alcohol ban across the state. Sinha’s motion was a way to press the Nitish Kumar-led government to pay for compensation to the victims in the case of spurious liquor.
The Bihar Chief Minister had previously stated and highlighted that the sale of liquor is banned in the state and if the people will still buy illicit liquor, then, it is likely that they will die. The statement by the Bihar CM received a lot of criticism and sparked an attack by the BJP on the ruling JDU-RJD Alliance.
Vijay Kumar Sinha also lashed out on the allegations made against him and stated that the allegations which were at the time was when I wasn’t present. The Speaker of the house had also ordered an inquiry against him according to reports. The opposition leader also sought condolence on the floor to the people who fell victim to the spurious alchohol.
The allegations made against Sinha was reported that illicit alcohol was ceased from near the residence of one of his relatives, however, Vijay Kumar Sinha quashed the allegations by bringing the copy of the FIR in which he claimed that there was no mention of any of his relatives.
The Opposition leader also sought that a copy of the order passed by the Chair to be tabled before the House and further asked that those who made the false allegation against him should issue him an apology. He further added that the allegations against him should also be expunged from the proceedings.
The speaker however, went on with the proceedings, which saw a lot of contention and sloganeering in the house by the opposition party. The speaker also instructed the marshals to take away the posters being shown by the opposition parties.
The Speaker by 11:30 was had enough with the opposition and adjourned the proceedings till 2 pm.
