The current terms of the three municipal bodies will expire between May 18 and 22. The state election commission had deferred the MCD polls announcement on March 9 saying that the Centre intends to merge the three civic bodies.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will introduce the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in the parliament on Friday. The Bill seeks to merge Delhi’s three municipal corporations South Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, into one.
What Bill says?
The Bill seeks to merge the three municipal corporations of Delhi into a single entity and the number of seats in the merged MCD will not exceed 250 down from the existing 272. Why AAP opposing?
Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party government has slammed the BJP calling the MCD merger Bill as the BJP’s tactic to delay polls. It will not make any difference in the poll prospects, the AAP said.
The current terms of the three municipal bodies will expire between May 18 and 22. The state election commission had deferred the MCD polls announcement on March 9 saying that the Centre intends to merge the three civic bodies.
A day after the Centre’s announcement of the reunification of MCD, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had dared the BJP to conduct the MCD on time and win it. He will quit politics if so BJP wins, he said.
