PM Modi became PM through Chunav Chori, claims Rahul Gandhi, renews attack on BJP

Rahul Gandhi has accused PM Modi and the BJP of coming to power through “chunav chori”, citing alleged large-scale voter fraud in Haryana and warning of similar tactics in Bihar.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has intensified his allegations against the BJP, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the country’s leader through what he termed as “chunav chori” (vote theft). His statement follows earlier accusations of massive voter fraud during last year’s Haryana assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi renews ‘vote theft’ charge

Addressing reporters, Gandhi said he will present evidence before the public, especially India’s youth, to prove his claim. “We will show India’s Gen Z that Narendra Modi became Prime Minister through chunav chori. The BJP indulges in vote theft, and we’ll make it clear so that there’s no doubt left,” he asserted.

The Congress leader alleged that 25 lakh out of two crore votes in Haryana were fake—about 12.5 per cent of the electorate. Citing an example, he said a picture of a Brazilian model was used in 22 voter list entries.

He accused the Election Commission of ignoring his complaints. “There was wholesale chori in Haryana. The BJP is defending it but not denying it. The EC has remained silent,” Gandhi said, adding that the same tactic could be repeated in the ongoing Bihar elections.

BJP calls Gandhi’s remarks “lies”

Reacting sharply, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, “Rahul Gandhi is a threat to the Constitution and Indian democracy. He lies consciously to create democratic deficit.”

The Brazilian photo controversy

Gandhi’s claims sparked curiosity after he showed a photo of a Brazilian national allegedly used in Indian voter lists. The woman, identified as Larissa Nery, a 28-year-old hairdresser, told media she was shocked to see her image used in another country’s political controversy. “Initially, I thought it was a bad joke, but later I got scared when I realised my photo was being used politically,” she said.

The image, reportedly free to download from stock photo platforms, became a viral element of the political debate around alleged voter fraud.

Government ropes in Meta, Google, and Telegram to prevent leaks ahead of NEET-UG re-exam

In a bid to ensure a fair and secure NEET-UG re-examination, the central government has partnered with tech giants like Meta, Google, and Telegram to actively eliminate fake online channels and misinformation networks before the June 21 test.

The central government has initiated a collaborative effort with major social media giants, including Meta, Google, and Telegram, to counter the spread of misinformation and secure the upcoming NEET-UG re-examination. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan chaired a high-level review meeting alongside central security and intelligence agencies to establish a foolproof security framework for the medical entrance test.

During the discussions, authorities raised serious concerns over the proliferation of fake paper-leak claims, clickbait content, and unverified information circulated via anonymous online groups and automated bots. Inputs from intelligence agencies revealed that multiple suspicious channels operate through a restricted set of phone numbers, pointing toward a coordinated effort to create panic among students and parents.

Focused crackdown on fraudulent networks

To address these vulnerabilities early, the Union Education Minister directed law enforcement and tech platforms to proactively identify, block, and take down channels spreading propaganda before the examination commences. The minister emphasized that social media platforms must work in sync with the Ministry of Education, the National Testing Agency (NTA), and security agencies to safeguard candidates from misleading narratives.

The high-level meeting, which included the director general of the NTA and senior ministry officials, aimed to map out potential security risks in advance to deploy preventive and corrective measures. Maintaining public trust in the examination process remains a top government priority.

The development follows the recent cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 exam originally held on May 3, which is currently being investigated by the CBI over paper-leak allegations. The re-test is officially scheduled to take place on June 21.
