Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Narendra Modi government and promised farmers in Punjab that the Congress would remove the farm laws once it comes to power at the Centre. He said the government had passed 3 black legislations in haste amid the Covid-19 pandemic. When 1,000 mandis shut forever, where would labourers working in these mandis go, he added.

Gandhi addressed several tractor rallies under the banner of the Kheti Bachao Yatra in Sangrur, Patiala and other parts of Punjab, along with Haryana and Delhi on Monday.

He called the Minimum Support Price, food procurement and wholesale markets as three pillars of the country. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted to destroy this system but Congress won’t let them destroy farmers.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said Parliament may have passed the bill and after presidential assent, it was now the law of the land but who said an amendment can’t be done to fix it. When we get majority in Lok Sabha and come to power, Rahul Gandhi would revoke these laws, he said.

The Haryana government has said Rahul Gandhi can bring in a few people, but it would not allow a big crowd from Punjab for tractor rally, which could disturb the atmosphere. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar slammed the Congress protest and accused the Congress party’s tractor protest of misleading farmers.

He said farmers know that Congress was misleading them. The Congress tried to mislead the country on issues like CAA, Ram temple but soon things will be clear and this issue will also die down soon, he said.

Haryana’s Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, who is under increasing pressure to quit the state government over the farm laws, attacked Rahul Gandhi, saying he lacked basic knowledge of farmers’ issues. It would be tough for Gandhi to point out the basic provisions of the newly-passed legislations, he said.

Election Commission officials check CM Eknath Shinde’s bag amid Uddhav Thackeray’s allegation

The Election Commission on Wednesday checked Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s bag amid Uddhav Thackeray’s allegation.

The Chief Minister’s bags were checked after his helicopter landed at the Palghar Police ground helipad. The action followed after Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray questioned the election panel after his bags were checked by officials. The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief said his bags had been inspected by the election authorities after he arrived in Latur and Yavatmal districts over the last two days.

He asked the Election Commission officials if the same action will be taken against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Addressing a public meeting in Wani, Uddhav Thackeray said that he is not angry with the ECI officials as they were doing their duty, and questioned whether they check the bags of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis.

Reacting to the allegations, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that Uddhav Thackeray was trying to divert the attention by needlessly protesting against the checking of his bags by poll officials and was seeking votes by whining.

The Deputy Chief Minister questioned what is wrong in checking bags, adding that their bags were also checked during campaigning, and that there was no need for this level of frustration. He mentioned that the Election Commission officials followed the same procedure with his campaign team too.

Earlier in the day, bags of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar were also checked by EC officials in Baramati. The Maharashtra BJP had also posted a video on X showing officials checking Devendra Fadnavis’ bags.

The Maharashtra Assembly Election will be held on November 20. The counting of votes will take place on November 13.

Chennai doctor stabbed 7 times by son of cancer patient, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin orders inquiry

In a harrowing incident, a Tamil Nadu government doctor was stabbed seven times at a Chennai hospital on Wednesday morning by a young man whose mother was being treated for cancer by the same doctor. The man was also a patient attender at that hospital.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that the doctor, an oncologist, is also a heart patient and suffered injuries to his upper chest and head. The Minister added that the doctor is in the Intensive Care Unit, or the ICU, but is in stable condition. Reportedly, a senior doctor said that his colleague has a pacemaker and was cut on his forehead and back, as well as behind his ear, and was also hit on his stomach.

The young man who stabbed him has been arrested. The gruesome attack took place in the OPD, or outpatient department, of the Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in the city’s Guindy neighbourhood. The young man reportedly suspected the doctor had prescribed incorrect medication to his mother, a cancer patient.

The 26 years old accused tried to escape after stabbing the doctor but was caught and handed over to the police. He used a small knife hidden on his person, but insisted there was no security lapse, the Health Minister said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered an inquiry and promised medical aid, as well as providing assurances such an attack won’t happen again. Taking to X, the Chief Minister said that the service of doctors is laudable and it is their responsibility to ensure their safety.

He added that the selfless work of our government doctors in providing treatment to patients regardless of the time is immeasurable. He further assured that the government will take measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

This incident once again questions the safety of healthcare workers at their workplace, an issue that shook the nation after the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.
