Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray after learning about the Election Commission of India’s decision to allot the party symbol to Eknath Shinde-led faction, Thackeray told the press his party will approach the Supreme Court to challenge the decision.

Uddhav Thackeray has dubbed the decision by the Election Commission of India to be dangerous for democracy and has also alleged the election body to be a slave of the ruling party.

Shiv Sena’s leader also told the media that the party will approach the Apex court and said that the party has full faith in the Supreme Court. He also added and said that the party had proposed in Court that the Election Commission should not pass its decision on the party symbol until the case on the disqualification petitions is not concluded.

Thackeray while addressing a press conference also told the media that the decision by the EC was unexpected, however, he added that the election commission had taken the decision in order to be able to announce the BMC election dates.

Uddhav Thackeray also alleged the decision to be a conspiracy and said that Senior BJP leaders, as well as the Shinde faction, had been claiming that the symbol will be allotted to them. Thackeray also alleged that Shinde and BJP alliance did so in order to run Mumbai from Delhi.

Thackeray also argued and questioned how can the validity of a political party be determined on the basis of elected representatives instead of its pool of members. He further added that if this is the matter, then representatives can be bought.

Following the decision by the Election Commission of India, Uddhav Thackeray also called a party meeting to draw out a plan of action in the matter on Saturday.

Eknath Shinde broke ties with Uddhav Thackeray in June last year to form an alliance with the BJP. Shinde’s coupe helped him become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Election Commission of India’s order on party symbol

The EC’s order on the matter said that 40 MLAs aligning with the Shinde faction got 36,57,327 votes out of a total of 47,82,440 votes, which totals for almost 76 percent of the votes polled for the 55 winning MLAs. The Commission further added and said that as per for 15 MLAs who aligned with the Uddhav Thackeray faction were able to garner 11,25,113 votes.
