Mudda panellists feel that the government needs to be pro-active in dealing with neighbours in wake of Shahbaz Sharif’s outrageous statement on Kashmir, endorse tit-for-tat attitude with respect to aggression by Pakistan
Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of the Pakistani province of Punjab and brother of former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has vowed to make Kashmir “part of Pakistan”. On the other hand, China’s influence over India’s neighbours is growing. APN’s popular debate Mudda wanted to know what exactly is the government policy vis-à-vis neighbours? Anchorperson Anant posed the questions to panelist including BJP’s Yogesh Verma, Congress’s Ajay Verma, former diplomat JK Tripathi, defence expert Col Ramdev Singh, defence expert Retd Maj Gen PK Sehgal, and APN consultant Govind Pant Raju.
Yogesh Verma said: “The government does not have a soft policy. We have been giving a tit-for-tat response to Pakistan. Moreover, Pakistan has been isolated internationally.”
Tripathi said: “PoK was always a problem area for us. There’s no instant solution for this. We should aggressively defend our stand. SAARC could not be held in Pakistan, though Pakistan has been mobilizing support for SAARC in Nepal and Bangladesh.”
Ajay Verma said: “The government needs to come clear on its policies and intentions vis a vis Pakistan, Chan and Myanmar. It is said that China is supporting Pakistan. Our defence budget should go up. We need to be pro-active.”
Col Ramdev Singh said: “It’s clear that China is backing Pakistan. China has been putting pressure amongst all neighbours. d should be suitably allocated to make way for modernisation.”
Sehgal said: “Pak army, the ISI and the judiciary has stifled democracy there.”
Raju said: “Pakistan army has hijacked the system there.“
Yogesh Verma said: ”The Army has been given a free hand in Pakistan. There is no factory in Pakistan, and its economy is weak. We need to realise the enemy is both foolish and irrational.“
Ajay Verma said: “Where is the 56 inch chest we have been hearing about so much? Border security should be fixed first.”
Sehgal said: “I would like to ask Mr Ajay Verma, what the Congress did when it was in power? We are still failing in providing bullet proof vests and jackets to our troops.”
Col Ramdev Singh said: “It’s true that we are failing in provide troops with equipment etc at the right time. Still, when it comes to a fight, Indian troops are able to challenge the enemy well.”
Tripathi said: “China’s interference is not new. There is no permanent friendship in international affairs. Since India is no longer buying arms from Russia, it is moving towards Pakistan. After all, it has to sell its arms.”
Raju said: “R&D in defence has been rather slow, it has been caught in the bureaucratic red tape.”
Yogesh Verma said: “We are importing technology, and it’s Modi’s priority to boost innovation in the defence sector.”
Tripathi said: “It’s wrong to indulge in party politics. We can’t give credit for all the good work to Modi alonem, as in many cases he has ben continuing the work done by the previous governments.”
Raju said: “The earlier governments made some achievements, and also faulted on some areas. The government has a huge responsibility to give a fitting reply to Pakistan, and fulfill its poll promises.”
