Days after Indian captain Virat Kohli announced to stepping down as T20 captain after T20 World Cup 2021, it is being reported that former captain and legendry spinner Anil Kumble might become the head coach of team India after the completion of T20 World Cup 2021. Currently, Ravi Shastri is the head coach of team India and his tenure as the head coach of team India will end after T20 World Cup 2021.

According to a report from Indian Express, BCCI has contacted Kumble to become the head coach of India. Earlier, Kumble has coached team India between, 2016-17. He resigned from the post in June 2017 amid rumours of major fallout with captain Kohli over differences in their approach. Kumbke in his resignation letter wrote, he is being removed because of bringing professionalism, discipline, commitment and honesty bringing to the team, that captain didn’t like it. Later, after the resignation of Kumble, Indian captain Kohli deleted his tweet, in which he welcomed the coach in 2016.

Even in 2017, current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly wanted Kumble to continue as head coach, despite of differences with Kohli, when he was the member of Cricket Improvement Committee of BCCI. But, Kumble decided walk away from the controversies and resigned from the post.

Kumble as coach led India to the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final, which ended-up losing to arch-rival Pakistan. Currently, Kumble is the head coach and director of cricket operations of the IPL franchise Punjab Kings.

Reports also suggest that,before deciding to reach out to Kumble, BCCI had contacted Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene to offer the role of head coach. But he turned down the offer as he wants to coach the Sri Lanka team in near future. Jayawardene is currently the head coach of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. He has guided Mumbai Indians to win multiple titles.

On September 16th, Virat Kohli had announced, he will step down as T20 captain after T20 World Cup.

No discussion on Ajit Agarkar’s extension, BCCI clarifies after key meeting absence

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday addressed speculation surrounding chief selector Ajit Agarkar after he was absent from an important meeting involving India’s senior cricket leadership.

The meeting was attended by India captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, BCCI officials and Centre of Excellence director of cricket VVS Laxman. Agarkar, however, was not present either in person or virtually.

His absence led to speculation about his future as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee.

BCCI explains Agarkar’s absence

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said Agarkar was out of station when the meeting was called at short notice.

According to Saikia, Agarkar was in an area where he could not join the meeting online despite making efforts to do so.

Saikia’s clarification came amid reports and speculation over whether Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector could be extended.

No discussion on Agarkar’s extension

Asked whether the BCCI discussed extending Agarkar’s tenure during the meeting, Saikia said there was no such discussion.

He also rejected speculation about VVS Laxman being appointed as the BCCI’s director of cricket, saying the board had neither discussed such a move nor had any intention of doing so.

Agarkar’s tenure marked by key decisions

Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector has included several high-profile decisions involving India’s leadership and squad selection.

One notable decision was the backing of Suryakumar Yadav as a long-term T20I captain ahead of Hardik Pandya.

Another major call involved replacing Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. Both decisions attracted considerable attention and criticism, but Agarkar publicly defended the selection committee’s decisions.

For now, the BCCI has made it clear that Agarkar’s absence from Thursday’s meeting was due to logistical circumstances and that no discussion on extending his tenure took place during the meeting.

Jasprit Bumrah returns as India name squad for Afghanistan T20Is

Jasprit Bumrah returns to India’s squad for the Afghanistan T20I series, while Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also make the cut.

India have announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, with Jasprit Bumrah making a return after an injury break.

Bumrah last represented India in an ODI against England on July 16, when he suffered a left-knee injury. His inclusion in the Afghanistan squad is subject to fitness clearance. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana are also part of the squad subject to fitness clearance.

The Afghanistan series will begin on September 13 in New Delhi and will be played ahead of the 2026 Asian Games. The second T20I is scheduled for September 15, followed by the third match on September 17.

Sanju Samson, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi included

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has returned to the T20I squad, while teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also been included following his strong performances against Zimbabwe.

Sooryavanshi will be among the top-order options alongside Abhishek Sharma, Samson and Ishan Kishan. Samson and Kishan are the two designated wicketkeepers in the squad.

Shreyas Iyer has been named captain, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. Shivam Dube is also part of the middle order.

Bumrah to lead pace attack

Bumrah is set to spearhead the pace attack alongside Arshdeep Singh, with Harshit Rana providing another fast-bowling option.

The all-rounder group consists of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi form the spin options.

Hardik Pandya does not feature in the announced squad.

Dhruv Jurel marked his century in the second Test against Sri Lanka with a special celebration, revealing a “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan” tattoo on his bicep in Colombo on Monday.

Jurel reached his century after spending 22 deliveries on 99. After taking a risky single to complete the milestone, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter punched the air, removed his helmet and revealed the tattoo as his teammates celebrated.

Jurel remained unbeaten on 115 off 177 deliveries, while his century also saw him achieve a unique feat in Test cricket in Sri Lanka.

Jurel enters record books with century

Jurel became the second Indian batter to score a century from No. 7 or below in a Test match in Sri Lanka.

His unbeaten 115 is also the highest individual score by an Indian batter batting at No. 7 or below in a Test in Sri Lanka, according to the provided match report.

The century also made Jurel the first Indian batter to score a century from No. 7 during a Test series in Sri Lanka. The earlier century mentioned in the report came from Hardik while batting at No. 8.

Jurel seeks Pant’s advice

Jurel also spoke about batting alongside Rishabh Pant and said he regularly seeks advice from the experienced wicketkeeper-batter.

Jurel said Pant’s experience makes his presence valuable, particularly because both players are wicketkeepers who bat in the middle order.

He also explained that he does not try to imitate Pant’s aggressive style. Instead, Jurel focuses on identifying which bowler to attack and deciding which spells he needs to negotiate.

Jurel said he dedicated his second Test century to his parents.

Jurel gives Pant fitness update

Jurel also provided an update on Pant after the latter was unable to take over wicketkeeping duties towards the end of the day’s play.

According to Jurel, Pant had taken a hit on his right shoulder and the team was closely monitoring his condition.

Jurel said he took over wicketkeeping because Pant’s shoulder was not in good condition and expressed hope that Pant would be fit the following day.
