BCCI slaps heavy penalty on RR captain Sanju Samson for argument with on-field umpires

BCCI imposed a heavy penalty on the Royals’ wicket-keeper for breaching the BCCI code of conduct.

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson fined thirty percent of his match fees on Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for his argument with the umpires over his controversial dismissal against the home team, the Delhi Capitals.

Samson was leading the Royals to a convincing win at 86 runs as they pursued a target of 222 runs. But DC bowler Mukesh Kumar ended his innings as he attempted to knock him over long-on but Shai Hope caught him, staying within the boundary. Before giving the RR skipper, the umpires carefully inspected the catch and examined it very close.

However, Samson did not appear happy with the result because he believed Shai Hope had crossed the line and got into an argument with the umpires. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) fined the Royals’ wicketkeeper heavily for violating the BCCI code of conduct, even though RR did not win the match.

On May 07, 2024, at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, during Match 56 of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against the Delhi Capitals, Sanju Samson was fined thirty percent of his match fees for violating the IPL Code of Conduct, the official statement stated.

According to IPL Code of Conduct Article 2.8, Samson committed a Level 1 offense. He acknowledged the offense and consented to the Match Referee’s punishment. The decision of the Match Referee is final and binding for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the statement continued.

The director of RR’s team, Kumar Sangakkara, also mentioned the challenges the umpires had in rendering the decision at pivotal points in the match.

Replays and angles play a role, and occasionally you may believe that the foot has been touched. However, it is a challenging call for the third umpire to make. That’s what happens in cricket; the game was at a critical point. Our viewpoints on it are divergent. In light of what the umpires ultimately decided, you have to support that choice. They will discuss it with the umpire and work things out if we have any other opinions. However, even with that dismissal, they arguably needed to have won that game, Sangakkara said.

The RR captain has already received punishment this year; for a slow over-rate during the game against the Gujarat Titans, Samson was assessed an INR 12 lakh fine.

Rajasthan Despite the defeat to DC, the Royals maintain a comfortable four-point advantage over the third-place Chennai Super Kings and are positioned second in the points standings.
