Bumrah stays composed on Dukes ball row as India raise concerns during Lord’s Test

Jasprit Bumrah avoided stoking controversy when asked about the frequent Dukes ball changes during the third Test against England, despite growing frustration among players and fans.

India’s pace leader Jasprit Bumrah tactfully avoided any provocative remarks on the contentious Dukes ball situation that overshadowed day two of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s. The repeated changes of the ball drew attention and frustration, not just from players but also fans and former cricketers.

On just the second day of play, India raised concerns about a ball that had only been in use for around 10 overs. The umpire attempted the standard hoop test but failed, prompting a replacement. Captain Shubman Gill appeared visibly upset and was seen engaging in intense discussions with the umpiring team, highlighting the Indian camp’s dissatisfaction.

However, this wasn’t an isolated incident. Merely 48 deliveries later, the replacement ball also lost its shape, necessitating another change. Later in the session, England, too, sought a change, but the ball passed the hoop test, allowing play to proceed.

When questioned about the matter in the post-day press conference, Bumrah chose a neutral stance. “The ball changes, I don’t really control that… I don’t want to say any controversial statements and get my match fees deducted. We were bowling with the ball that we were given. That’s how it is. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes you get a bad ball,” he said.

Despite the off-field distractions, Bumrah put on a stellar performance under challenging conditions, claiming 5 wickets for 74 runs. His haul included the key scalps of Harry Brook, Joe Root, and England captain Ben Stokes—proving crucial in shifting momentum India’s way.

Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy had earlier praised Bumrah, saying that the team follows his lead. Reacting humorously, Bumrah said, “That answer is a lie. He’s not asked me anything.” He elaborated that today’s young cricketers are confident and self-assured, requiring minimal guidance. “I try to help in whatever capacity they need me. I share my experiences and what I’ve learned here, but I don’t interfere unnecessarily,” he added.

Bumrah’s measured approach both with the ball and in handling sensitive topics underscores his growing maturity and leadership within the team.
