Shubman Gill begins captaincy stint, Brad Hogg suggests resting Jasprit Bumrah for first Test

Brad Hogg advises resting Jasprit Bumrah for the opening Test vs England; Shubman Gill takes charge in his debut WTC series as captain.

With the five-Test series between India and England set to begin on June 20, the spotlight has turned to India’s team composition and leadership. Newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill will lead the side in a fresh World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, and one of the biggest talking points is the utilization of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Brad Hogg advises resting Bumrah for 1st Test

Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg has offered a strategic viewpoint on how India should manage Bumrah’s workload. According to Hogg, it might be in India’s interest to rest the ace pacer for the first Test and unleash him in subsequent matches.

“You’ve got to be very strategic with those three Test matches,” Hogg said in an interview with a media outlet. He emphasized the impact Bumrah can have, stating, “He can turn the game, he can turn the series on its head.” Hogg suggested that India should ensure Bumrah plays at Lord’s and potentially Warwickshire, citing the need to deploy him in the most decisive games.

The former spinner added that keeping Bumrah out of the first Test could create psychological pressure on England. “Just go, ‘Right, England, we don’t have Bumrah.’ And you could just see England thinking, ‘That’s good, we don’t have to face him.’ But then they start worrying about him from the second Test.”

Shubman Gill’s first big test as captain

This series also marks a significant transition for India, with Shubman Gill stepping in as the 37th Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from red-ball cricket. Gill, who has played in multiple roles for the Indian Test side, will be at the helm for the first time in a long series, with Rishabh Pant serving as his deputy.

Gill revealed that both head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have kept their expectations flexible, allowing him to lead in his own way. The emphasis, he said, is on letting him express himself and not trying to emulate anyone else.

The upcoming Test series thus promises not just high-stakes cricket but also crucial insights into India’s evolving strategy under a new captain and with a renewed focus on workload management for key players.

Zaheer Khan named CSK head coach ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach ahead of IPL 2027, replacing Stephen Fleming.

Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The five-time IPL champions announced the appointment on Monday, with Zaheer taking over from long-serving coach Stephen Fleming.

Fleming stepped down from his CSK role in July and subsequently took charge as head coach of the England men’s Test team. Zaheer’s appointment marks his first stint as a head coach at any level.

CSK announced the move on social media with the message welcoming Zaheer as the team’s new head coach.

Zaheer Khan’s coaching experience

Zaheer has previously held senior coaching and mentoring roles in the IPL. He served as Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket from 2018 to 2022 before taking up a mentoring role with Lucknow Super Giants from August 2024 to September 2025.

He was also initially named India’s bowling coach in 2017 after Anil Kumble became head coach. Following Ravi Shastri’s appointment later that year, Zaheer’s role was changed to bowling consultant.

As a player, Zaheer represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is. He was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2011 ODI World Cup, taking 21 wickets during the tournament.

Stephen Fleming’s CSK exit

Fleming had two coaching stints with Chennai Super Kings, from 2009 to 2015 and again from 2018 to 2026. He left the franchise in July this year to become England’s men’s Test coach, succeeding former New Zealand teammate Brendon McCullum.

Zaheer will now oversee CSK as the franchise prepares for IPL 2027. The appointment brings an Indian former international cricketer into the team’s head coaching role following Fleming’s departure.
