Ibrahim Zadran made history by becoming the first Afghan batter to score a century in the Champions Trophy during a Group B match against England, captained by Jos Buttler, on February 26 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. This remarkable achievement follows Ibrahim’s recent lacklustre performance against South Africa, where he was dismissed for just 17 runs by Kagiso Rabada. However, against England, Ibrahim shined after Afghanistan opted to bat first.

He started cautiously and reached his half-century off 65 balls, capitalizing on the early dismissals of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal, and Rahmat Shah, who all fell without reaching double digits. Ibrahim was instrumental in forming a key partnership of 103 runs with Hashmatullah Shahidi, who scored 40, before Shahidi was dismissed by Adil Rashid. In the 37th over, Ibrahim ran a single off Liam Livingstone, completing his century in just 106 balls. He celebrated by raising his arms in triumph, soaking up the crowd’s admiration.

Ibrahim had recently returned to international cricket following a significant ankle injury that required surgery in September, which had sidelined him since Afghanistan’s semi-final match against South Africa during the Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States. During his recovery, he shared on social media glimpses of his rehabilitation journey, including photos of himself on crutches.

In his heartfelt post, he expressed his desire to represent Afghanistan again, stating, “There’s nothing I want more than to return to the field… I’ll be back stronger, In sha Allah.” His injury meant he missed a Test against New Zealand and two ODI series against South Africa and Bangladesh.
