England’s Bazball approach disappears at Lord’s, Aakash Chopra questions slow Day 1 display

England’s slow 251-run total on Day 1 of the Lord’s Test against India led to Aakash Chopra mocking their Bazball absence. Root’s slow half-century and Stokes’ injury added to concerns.

England’s batting performance on the opening day of the third Test against India has triggered a wave of criticism, as the side managed a modest total of 251 runs while ditching their hallmark aggressive “Bazball” strategy. The slow scoring rate—just 3.02 runs per over—marked their least enterprising effort since Brendon McCullum took over as head coach in 2022.

Ex-India batter Aakash Chopra didn’t mince words while reviewing the innings, taking a sarcastic swipe at the lack of attacking intent. In his post-match analysis, Chopra remarked, “Bazball used to be a thing, right? Where has it gone now? Feels like it’s lost somewhere near St John’s Wood,” referring to the locality where Lord’s is situated.

Joe Root’s gritty half-century stirs debate

Joe Root, a key figure in England’s Test line-up, scored 50 off 157 deliveries—his slowest half-century since England adopted the Bazball approach. Chopra took a dig at the former England captain too, saying Root seemed to have returned to his classical technique after struggling in the first two Tests.

“Root has often been accused of being too aggressive under this new system, but this time he seemed to anchor the innings. Maybe he’s realised that he needs to grind out some runs,” Chopra added.

Ben Stokes’ injury a growing concern

Adding to England’s worries, captain Ben Stokes showed visible discomfort on the field due to what appeared to be a groin strain. Despite his injury, he continued to bat and ended the day unbeaten on 39. His fitness, however, has become a talking point, especially with the five-match series currently level at 1-1.

Vice-captain Ollie Pope addressed the situation post-stumps, expressing hope for Stokes’ quick recovery. “We’ve got our fingers crossed. The next few days are critical, and we’ll do everything to manage him well,” said Pope, highlighting the importance of the skipper’s presence as the Test progresses.

With four days of play remaining, England’s uncharacteristically reserved start has drawn scrutiny, and questions are mounting over whether the Bazball strategy is sustainable under pressure conditions.
