Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh

Junior coach and a national-level woman athlete accused renowned hockey player and Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh of sexual harassment at his residence in September. She alleged that the Olympian had invited her to her Chandigarh residence and touched her inappropriately, praised her figure, and asked her to keep him happy.

The coach also alleged that the sports minister contacted her on Instagram and had a chat with her while using a vanish mode, which automatically deleted the alleged conversation between the two. She even accused the minister of asking her to chat on Snapchat and alleged that he called her to meet him personally at Sector 7 in Chandigarh.

The 400m national champion athlete alleged that the minister continued to block and unblock her when she did not turn up to his directions. She later alleged that Sandeep called her at his residence in the name of submitting some documents where she was sexually harassed. The female instructor claims that Sandeep Singh promised her the choicest place of posting and other perks in exchange for sexual favours.

The victim claimed that after refusing to follow the minister’s orders, she was transferred and further harassed by having her training stopped. The female coach added that she had brought up the matter with the chief minister’s office, the DGP office, and Home Minister Anil Vij, among others, but she was not heard.

A few hours later, Sandeep Singh held a press conference in Chandigarh and termed the allegations absolutely false and baseless. He said the junior coach was posted to Jhajjar, but she wanted to stay in Panchkula. He asked her to submit the application to the department and told the senior officers to adjust all such players so that their training does not get hampered, he said. Singh further demanded an independent probe into this matter.

Meanwhile, the opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has appealed to the chief minister to intervene and take action against the sports minister Sandeep Singh.
