India’s star batsman Virat Kohli had to return home today due to family ememrgeency, but he is expected to rejoin the team before the first Test match against South Africa begins.
According to reports, Kohli returned home because of a family emergency, but he will be available for the next Test series before it starts.
Meanwhile, due to a persistent finger injury, Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out, which is a setback for the team.
The 26-year-old opener suffered a finger injury in Port Elizabeth during the second ODI against the hosts. Gaikwad is released from the Indian squad immediately because, in spite of the efforts of the BCCI Medical Team, his recuperation schedule does not coincide with the impending Tests. His absence will be lamented, particularly given his recent performances, which were encouraging.
After being given permission by the BCCI and team management to skip the current three-day practice match amongst Indian players in Pretoria, Kohli left for Mumbai almost three days ago.
During the white-ball series of the South Africa tour, which saw India play three T20I matches against South Africa and then three ODIs, Kohli was given a respite. India and South Africa’s T20I series ended in a 1-1 draw, with the first game being cancelled due to weather.
Sanju Samson scored his first-ever century in the last game of the three-match ODI series on Thursday at Boland Park in Paarl, as India won 2-1. The series’ star player was Arshdeep Singh, who took ten wickets, including an incredible five-wicket haul.
Once the three-day match concludes on Friday and the ODI series ends on Thursday, all of the Indian players will be in Johannesburg. They will travel to Centurion for the impending Test from there. The team will move to Cape Town following the Boxing Day Test on December 30, when the second and final Test is slated to begin on January 3.
