India vs England 5th Test Day 5: Siraj’s fiery spell fuels India’s fightback, England 2 wickets away from defeat

India clawed back into contention on the final day of the fifth and final Test at The Oval, as pacer Mohammed Siraj struck in his very first over to leave England reeling at 354/8. With only 25 more runs needed for a series win, England are now just three wickets away from defeat in a dramatic finale of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.

Jamie Smith, who walked in with the target in sight, was dismissed caught behind by Dhruv Jurel off Siraj’s third delivery, setting the tone for a tense morning session. England’s hopes now rest on Jamie Overton (9*) and Gus Atkinson (5*), the last recognized pair standing between India and a famous victory.

India’s comeback led by inspired pace attack

On Day 4, India had looked out of the contest with England riding on centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook. However, the momentum shifted in the final session as Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj triggered a middle-order collapse. England lost three key wickets for just 36 runs — including Root and Brook — halting their aggressive run chase.

Prasidh Krishna has so far claimed 3 wickets for 121 runs in 24 overs, while Siraj has scalped 4 for in 28 overs, both proving crucial to India’s resurgence.

England’s Bazball tested in tense finish

Continuing with their attacking approach even in a precarious situation, England’s Jamie Overton smashed two quick boundaries off the first over of the day, showing no signs of slowing down. However, Atkinson nearly fell on his first delivery, edging the ball perilously close to KL Rahul in the slips.

The Oval is now witnessing a high-stakes battle where every run and wicket counts. With 21 runs required and three wickets in hand, the match hangs in the balance.

Stakes high for India

Led by Shubman Gill in this final Test, India must win to level the five-match series and retain the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. A loss would mean conceding the series to England, who have embraced the ‘Bazball’ approach with full vigour throughout.

As play resumes, all eyes remain glued to The Oval, where the drama continues to unfold ball by ball.
