Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the frontrunner to take over India’s ODI captaincy after Rohit Sharma, according to sources. The move comes just a day after Iyer was left out of India’s 15-member Asia Cup squad.

Iyer to lead in ODIs, Gill to take over T20Is

Selectors reportedly see Iyer as a long-term replacement for Rohit in the 50-over format. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who has already been handed Test captaincy, is set to lead India in T20Is once Suryakumar Yadav steps down from the role. Gill has also been named vice-captain for the Asia Cup squad, where he will assist Suryakumar.

The formal decision on India’s ODI leadership could come after the Asia Cup, scheduled from September 9 to 28 in the UAE.

Rohit and Kohli to decide ODI future

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to take a personal call on their ODI careers. Reports suggest the upcoming white-ball series in Australia could potentially be their last in the format.

Kohli, 36, has amassed 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs with 51 centuries, averaging nearly 58. Rohit, 38, has 11,168 runs in 272 matches, including a record-breaking 264-run knock, with an average close to 49.

The two stalwarts were last seen in ODI action during the ICC Champions Trophy, where India lifted the title. Kohli’s standout performances included a century against Pakistan and 84 against Australia in the semifinal, while Rohit’s decisive 76 in the final helped seal the trophy.
