Champions Trophy 2025: Shubman Gill to captain India as injured Rohit Sharma might be rested against New Zealand

This match against New Zealand could provide valuable insights into Gill’s leadership style and capabilities.

The Indian cricket team is poised to potentially unveil its captaincy future in the upcoming Champions Trophy match against New Zealand, as vice-captain Shubman Gill may be given the opportunity to lead the squad. With skipper Rohit Sharma still grappling with fitness concerns due to a hamstring injury sustained in the last match against Pakistan, reports suggest the team management is considering resting him for the final Group A game, especially since India has already secured a spot in the semi-finals.

If Rohit is indeed rested, Shubman Gill will likely take the helm. His leadership potential has garnered considerable backing, with many within the cricketing community speculating that he could become India’s captain across various formats in the future. This match against New Zealand could provide valuable insights into Gill’s leadership style and capabilities.

Rohit did not participate in the nets on Wednesday, making him the only Indian batter to miss the training session. Instead, he focused on recovery with the team’s strength and conditioning coach and physiotherapist indoors, which raises concerns regarding his hamstring condition. His previous effort to return to the field after his injury only adds to the uncertainty surrounding his fitness.

Should Rohit sit out, significant shifts in the batting order may occur for the clash against New Zealand. KL Rahul is expected to open the innings alongside Gill, while Rishabh Pant could be brought in to fulfill the finisher’s role typically occupied by Rahul. Should Pant take on wicketkeeping duties as well, it would necessitate Rahul moving to the outfield, despite his consistent role as wicketkeeper throughout the tournament, IE reported.

In summary, the match against New Zealand could not only provide an opportunity for advancing in the tournament but also offer a glimpse into the possibilities for India’s cricketing future, particularly under Gill’s potential leadership.
