Sport of millions- Awkward questions about cricket

World Cup

And although cricket is almost unknown outside the former British Empire, in countries with a total population of about 2 billion people, it is a religion. They have heard about Messi and may have an idea of who Pele is. But in the hearts forever – Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, and in the Instagram feed – Virat Kohli and Joe Root.

India captain Kohli confidently pushes the Bollywood stars at the top of the popularity chart and earns $25 million a year as Liverpool’s top scorer Mo Salah.

Ex-captain Sachin has a status close to divine in India. And the former leader of the national team of Pakistan, Imran Khan, now leads the entire country as prime minister. Australia is minting coins bearing the portrait of the legendary Don Bradman, and the British Queen is knighting former English captain Alistair Cooke.

Do they really play all day long?

Only if it’s a short match. Normal – the so-called test, the test – lasts five days: six hours a day with a 40-minute lunch break and two 20-minute tea parties.

The classic series of five test matches, in which two separate teams regularly sort things out with each other, takes up to a month and a half.

This has advantages. At least in the fact that, at the amateur level, cricket goes well with a day-long picnic in the park. And the spectators of the professional match of professionals are always guaranteed entertainment from morning to evening.

What to do if it rains?

This is not the only problem. There are also bees.

During the rainy season the match is suspended. The field is covered, and special machines pump out water from the lawn and its central playing part – the pitch, the preparation of which requires special skills and patience.

In one-day matches, if the rain does not stop before the evening, then the game is declared inconclusive. But not always: if enough balls are played in the second half of the match, the result is determined by a complex formula developed by the English mathematician Tony Lewis.

And what is the purpose of the game?

The main rules are very simple. Nuances and exceptions are another matter. It is difficult to understand them all even after a month and a half of almost daily matches of the World Cup. But this only makes the game more interesting – almost any meeting gives rise to heated debates.

In the middle of the 19th century, the British even considered banning competitive cricket for public safety reasons. A rare game then did without massacre and mutilation – and even murder.

If you do not go into subtleties, in general terms, everything looks like this. Two teams of 11 people – like in football. But they attack and defend in turn.

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant been banned for one-match and a fined Rs INR 30 lakh for the slow over-rate offense, which is a breach of IPL Code of Conduct, committed by his team against Rajasthan Royals.

On May 07, 2024, during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against the Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, his team maintained a slow over-rate.

Pant will therefore be unable to play in Sunday’s pivotal against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. It should be mentioned that DC has still managed to maintain their chances of qualifying for the playoffs in the 17th season of Indian Premier League and that a loss would result in their elimination from the tournament.

The BCCI said in a statement, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal contesting the Match Referee’s decision in accordance with Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The appeal was then sent to the BCCI Ombudsman for assessment after that. The Ombudsman had a virtual hearing and confirmed that the match referee’s decision is still final and enforceable, the BCCI said in a press release.

This season DC’s comeback has been greatly aided by Pant, particularly after a rocky beginning. As a result of the contributions of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jake Fraser-McGurk, DC has emerged as one of the most interesting teams to watch in both categories of the game. The highest point of Pant’s leadership was demonstrated in their away match against GT. Pant won player of the match awards for his outstanding captaincy, which enabled DC to put out GT for just 89 runs.

DC is currently sharing fifth place in the league table with both CSK and LSG. There are still two games for DC, one against LSG and one against RCB.

India’s star pace bowler Mohammed Shami has taken exception to the animated chat between Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka and captain KL Rahul, which has gone viral on social media. In the video, Sanjiv Goenka can be seen upset with KL Rahul after Sun Risers Hyderabad beat Lucknow Super Giants by 10 wickets. Mohammed Shami said that LSG team owner’s behaviour is a matter of shame, and the same thing could have been done in the dressing room or the hotel.

Mohammad Shami spoke to the media where he said players have respect, and the LSG Owner is a respectful person, too. He added many people are watching him and learning from him. He said such behaviour in public domain is a matter of shame… ye sharam ki baat hai.

The star pacer said if Goenka had to do it, then there are many different ways. He could’ve done the same thing in the dressing room or the hotel. It was not necessary at all to do it on the field in front of the media. Aise reaction dekar laal qile pe jhanda toh gaada nahi hai aapne (He did not prove anything by behaving in such manner).

Mohammed Shami said that cricket is an unpredictable game and anything is possible.  He pointed out that KL Rahul is the captain of the team and is not a regular player and such behaviour in public domain sends a wrong message. He further added that cricket is a team game and he cannot blame one player.

According to reports speculations are high that KL Rahul may leave Lucknow Super Giants after the 17th season. Meanwhile, LSG are still in the hunt for the playoffs as the team has collected 12 points from 12 games and they need to win their remaining matches to play in the next round.
