Indian skipper Virat Kohli led Team India to a dominating series win over Australia after losing the first match of the series at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Australia who won the last ODI series in India 3-2, came out blazing in the first ODI and won it comprehensively by 10 wickets.

India came back strongly in the second ODI at Rajkot and put a mammoth 340 total on the board, that helped them win the match by 36 runs.

In the series decided, Indian bowlers restricted Australia to 286/9 despite Steve Smith’s first ODI ton in three years. KL Rahul was promoted to open the innings with Rohit Sharma after Shikhar Dhawan suffered an injury during the course of the match.

Rohit Sharma smashed his 29th ODI ton and Virat Kohli continued his top-form to help India win the match and the series with 15 balls to spare.

Here are the three takeaways from the series:

Versatile KL Rahul:

After delivering regularly in the limited-overs format, KL Rahul was initially accommodated in the team as a batsman at number three. In the first match, he scored 47 runs, but it meant skipper Kohli had to play out of his usual position and it did not go well for India.

In the same match, Rahul had to don the wicketkeeper’s gloves as Rishabh Pant could not take the field after suffering from a blow on his head while batting that lead to concussion.

In the second game, Rahul was asked to bat at number five and he impressed with the bat after scoring 80 runs off 52 balls. While keeping, he completed a quick stumping to dismiss Aaron Finch and was involved in three dismissals.

By the final match, he embraced the keeper’s role and took two fine catches behind the stumps before opening the innings. His versatile role earned praises from skipper Kohli after the match.

Team India’s winning attitude:

Indian skipper Virat Kohli led his side to another comeback series win after going down in the first match. This was the third instance, since the cricket World Cup last year where India have lost the first match of the series but have come back to win it.

It has been Team India’s hunger for wins that has helped them analyze their shortcomings and come back stronger against a particular opposition. Australia, a stronger opponent than West Indies and Bangladesh, were defeated by India’s analysis of their opponents’ positives and playing on their weaknesses.

Consistent Virat Kohli:

Indian skipper Virat Kohli was taken by surprise in the first match by the Aussie leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who became the most successful spinner against the Indian batting maestro. But in the second and last game of the series, Kohli showed why he was the best batsman in the world.

After one ‘rare failure’, ‘King’ Kohli was at his consistent best. After being dismissed for 16 runs in Mumbai, Kohli returned with scores of 78 runs and 89 runs at Rajkot and Bengaluru, respectively. His consistency and leadership earned him the Man of the Series award even though, his rival and Australian batsman Steve Smith was the highest run-getter in the series.

Shreyas Iyer Admitted To ICU

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney after suffering internal bleeding from a rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia. The injury, described as “potentially fatal” by a team source, has left Iyer under intensive care and extended his expected recovery timeline.

Sudden deterioration after on-field injury

Iyer injured himself while taking a spectacular backward-running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Soon after returning to the dressing room, he reportedly felt discomfort, prompting immediate medical attention.
According to sources, the medical team detected internal bleeding following a scan, after which Iyer was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“He has been in ICU for the past couple of days. Internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately,” the source said, adding that doctors are monitoring him closely to prevent infection due to the internal injury.

“Could have been fatal,” says team source

Team doctors acted swiftly when Iyer’s vital signs fluctuated in the dressing room. “The medical staff didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.

Initially expected to miss around three weeks of cricket, Iyer’s recovery could now take longer due to the severity of the injury.
“With internal bleeding involved, he’ll need more time to heal. It’s difficult to put a timeline on his return,” the source said.

To remain in Sydney for recovery

The 31-year-old batter is likely to stay under observation in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being cleared to travel back to India. He is not part of India’s T20 squad.

India produced a commanding display in the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, securing a dominant nine-wicket victory to end the series 2-1 in favour of the hosts. Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli anchored the chase of 237 with a flawless partnership, ensuring India wrapped up the game in just 38.3 overs.

Rohit, who had struggled in the opening match, returned to form with style. After a fluent 73 in the second ODI, he followed it up with his 33rd ODI century – also his 50th in international cricket. His innings reinforced his reputation as one of the most consistent limited-overs batters in world cricket.

Kohli Surpasses Sangakkara, Delivers Classic Knock

Virat Kohli, too, found his rhythm after two early dismissals in the series. The right-hander reached his fifty off 56 deliveries and went on to make history by surpassing Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, behind only Sachin Tendulkar.

During the innings, Kohli also set another milestone, overtaking Tendulkar for the most fifty-plus scores in successful ODI chases. His partnership with Rohit, defined by precise stroke play and calm execution, dismantled Australia’s attack.

Harshit Rana’s Spell Turns The Tide

Earlier in the day, Australia were bundled out for 236 in 46.4 overs after being comfortably placed at 183 for 3. Pacer Harshit Rana, backed consistently by head coach Gautam Gambhir, justified the faith with a brilliant spell of 4 for 39. His incisive bowling triggered a collapse that saw the hosts lose their last seven wickets for just 53 runs.

Mitchell Marsh, who had opted to bat first after winning the toss, top-scored for Australia, but none of the batters could convert their starts into big scores.

India End Tour On High Note

Despite losing the series, India’s emphatic win in Sydney will serve as a confidence booster heading into the upcoming T20 leg. Rohit’s return to form, Kohli’s records, and Rana’s rise were the standout moments in what turned into a memorable outing for the Men in Blue.

India’s young pacer Harshit Rana justified head coach Gautam Gambhir’s faith in him with an impressive four-wicket spell, as India bowled out Australia for 236 in the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Australia, who opted to bat after skipper Mitchell Marsh won the toss, appeared comfortable at 183 for 3 before India staged a strong comeback through disciplined bowling. Rana’s fiery spell of 4 for 39 led the charge, while Kuldeep Yadav (1 for 50) and Prasidh Krishna also contributed to restricting the hosts.

Harshit Rana shines under Gambhir’s trust

Backed consistently by head coach Gautam Gambhir, Harshit Rana proved his mettle yet again. His well-controlled pace and variations dismantled Australia’s middle and lower order. Rana’s wickets included key dismissals such as Mitchell Owen and Cooper Connolly, halting Australia’s progress in the death overs.

Kuldeep Yadav’s return to the playing XI after being benched in the previous two ODIs also paid off, as he bowled economically and claimed the wicket of Mitchell Starc. Prasidh Krishna had an expensive outing but picked up one wicket to wrap up the innings.

Australia’s collapse after strong start

After a solid platform built by their top order, Australia lost seven wickets for just 53 runs in the latter half of their innings. Nathan Ellis and Connolly tried to steady the innings but failed to resist India’s attack. The team folded in 46.4 overs at a run rate of 5.06.

India will now look to chase down 237 and end the series on a positive note, having lost the first two ODIs in the three-match series.
