The Indian cricket team donned black armbands during their Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal clash against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday. This gesture was a tribute to Padmakar Shivalkar, a legendary figure in Indian domestic cricket, who passed away at the age of 84 in Mumbai.
Shivalkar was a pivotal force in Mumbai’s dominance in the Ranji Trophy, playing a key role in the team’s success from 1965-66 to 1976-77, securing nine championship titles. Known for his impeccable left-arm spin, he claimed 589 wickets in 124 first-class matches, boasting an extraordinary bowling average of 19.69.
BCCI’s tribute to a domestic cricket icon
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed deep grief over the demise of Shivalkar, recognizing his invaluable contributions to Mumbai and Indian domestic cricket. The cricketing body acknowledged his unmatched skill and dedication in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“Padmakar Shivalkar was a true maestro of left-arm spin, whose craft and commitment left a lasting legacy in Indian domestic cricket,” the BCCI stated.
An unforgettable Ranji Trophy legacy
Shivalkar’s most notable performance came in the 1972-73 Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu, where he single-handedly decimated the opposition with figures of 8/16 and 5/18, leading Mumbai to another title triumph. Despite his incredible performances, he never got the opportunity to represent India internationally due to the presence of the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi.
BCCI President Roger Binny paid tribute, stating, “Indian cricket has lost a legend today. His remarkable talent and dedication made him a respected figure in Mumbai’s cricketing circles.”
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia echoed the sentiments, adding, “His impact on Mumbai cricket was immense. His consistency and longevity in the game were an inspiration to many aspiring cricketers.”
A lifetime of cricketing excellence
Though international recognition eluded him, Shivalkar’s contributions were acknowledged in 2017 when he received the prestigious Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. His legacy in Indian domestic cricket remains unparalleled, inspiring future generations of cricketers.
The black armbands worn by Team India in the Champions Trophy semifinal served as a solemn yet powerful tribute to a man whose influence on Indian cricket remains profound, ensuring that his contributions will never be forgotten.
