The victim, reportedly a resident of northeast India, drives a bike taxi for aggregator Rapido.

As per reports, the incident took place on Monday near Bengaluru’s Indira Nagar metro station and was captured on camera by a bystander who then posted it on Twitter, tagging Bengaluru police and asking for action against the driver.

Responding to the post, the Bengaluru Police in a tweet assured strict action against the man. They said that police in Indiranagar are investigating the incident and strict action will be taken.

The video also sparked outrage among users on social media platforms as they expressed their disgust at the autorickshaw driver’s behavior and demanded action.

A user wrote: “Auto drivers are the biggest crooks. They will demand Rs 100 to 200 extra with no logic. They will refuse to put meter. This auto driver should be behind the bars for taking law into his own hands. He’s even destroyed private property of that person riding rapido.”

Another user commented: “Auto drivers of Bangalore are one of the worst in the country. Absolute law breakers, never go by meter, demand money as they wish. This is my personal experience in Kalsipalya and other localities.”

In prohibition state Gujarat, undertrial drinks beer sitting in police van in Ahmedabad, video surfaces

Users are calling for a quick response against people responsible for such rampant flouting of the law.

Published

It’s common knowledge among people in Gujarat who enjoy their tipple that booze flows quite freely down the Sabarmati despite the state being under prohibition, if you have the right contacts. But a recent video of an undertrial sitting and quaffing two cans of beer inside a police van when he has ostensibly been brought to court has gone viral.

The incident is believed to have happened near the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad. The man in the video can be enjoying his beers and can be seen kissing the cans as he cradles them before drinking from them.

Many users on X have been shocked by the video. As expected, they were aghast that how can such a thing happen in Gujarat, which is the self-avowed model state in the country?

For the record, Gujarat has been under prohibition since 1960 when it was carved out as a separate entity from the erstwhile Bombay state, which also had also been under prohibition off and on. The logic behind its continuance has been believed to be that Mahatma Gandhi was against alcohol.

But for now, the Ahmedabad Police is at the receiving end of social media users’ ire since people wondered where exactly were the policemen who were accompanying the beer-swilling undertrial.

The video clip is being shared extensively and reshared many times on many platforms, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi’s name (Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel holds the charge for Home) is also being referred to many times in tweets. Users are calling for a quick response against people responsible for such rampant flouting of the law.

The incident has also sparked a larger conversation about the effectiveness of Gujarat’s prohibition strategy. While there is a large but invisible group pitching for the lifting of the curbs on alcohol, the status quo suits many, including political leaders.
