Happy Onam! Kerala: Dance video of girls in hijab goes viral | WATCH
Anil Kumar, a party colleague and MLA from Wandoor, posted the video on his Facebook page.

A video of women students in hijab celebrating Onam at a school in the Wandoor area of Malappuram district of northern Kerala is going viral on social media.
In the video, some hijab-wearing girls of the Wandoor Government Girls Higher Secondary School, wearing sarees, dance along with other students to music as part of Onam celebrations.
Thousands are applauding it and some have even compared it with the hijab controversy that has rocked neighbouring Karnataka where girl students in hijab were prevented from attending school and writing their examinations. The Karnataka High Court had ruled that hijab is not “essential” to Islam, which could have implications across the entire nation. The court also upheld a state government directive that banned headscarves in schools, colleges, etc. This case is now in the Supreme Court and the Apex Court is hearing it currently.
A user tweeted that Wandoor Higher Secondary School in Malappuram hosts an Onam festival. Dedicated to the low-minded people who claim that Onam is a Hindu festival while it is a harvest festival to welcome Mahabali on the lone day he gets to visit Kerala.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was also among those who liked this tweet. Anil Kumar, a party colleague and MLA from Wandoor, posted the video on his Facebook page.
Ashok Swain, a Professor at Uppsala University, Sweden, tweeted that Muslim students in Kerala celebrate Onam while wearing hijab. The harvest celebration of the people of Kerala is called Onam. As the Hindu right has asserted, this is not exclusively a Hindu celebration. Additionally, thousands of people have liked this post.
As per Hindu mythology, the Vamana avatar of Vishnu came upon earth to rid it of Mahabali, an Asura king, who ruled Kerala. Present-day Kerala’s link with the Vaishnavite tradition grows even stronger with the next avatar, that of Parasurama, who is said to have thrown an axe into what is now known as the Arabian Sea, and created the landmass that became Kerala.
