Indian-origin woman arrested for defrauding 17 couples with fake wedding venues in South Africa

“Her actions significantly impacted our plans, and what was meant to be our dream day has turned into an event where we must settle for what we can afford,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.

A 53-year-old Indian-origin South African attorney, who was disbarred, has been arrested for scamming 17 couples across the country by collecting payments for the same wedding venue on the same day. She was apprehended after being tracked down by a private security firm.

Despite her arrest, promises made by her lawyer and family to reimburse all the scam victims may allow her to avoid prison time for fraud. Though her name had not been released initially due to no court appearance, the security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) later identified her as Prelyn Mohanlall. Her attorney, Chris Gounden, contacted RUSA to propose arrangements for repaying victims who possess proof of payment.

Mohanlall allegedly deceived couples planning their weddings into making substantial advance payments for a venue to which she had no connection. Upon arriving at the supposed venue, couples found it abandoned, lacking water and electricity, devastating their special day.

One of the affected couples, who chose to remain anonymous, enlisted RUSA’s help in December of the previous year to track Mohanlall down. The investigation revealed a total of 17 couples had fallen victim to her scheme through social media.

According to Prem Balram, head of RUSA, “Complainants came from several provinces in South Africa. A detective from SAPS Boksburg North in Gauteng informed RUSA that the same suspect was wanted for two fraud cases in Gauteng in 2024. She had previously defrauded a car dealership of R200,000 and another couple of R26,000.” Following the investigation, it emerged that Mohanlall had been barred by the Law Society for misappropriating funds from a client’s trust account.

Balram further reported that Mohanlall has a criminal record with a history of scams spanning over two decades. In a statement to the weekly Post, she denied running a scam, claiming her business was simply experiencing difficulties, which hindered her ability to refund couples who canceled their weddings. She asserted that she owed nine couples around R60,000 and intended to repay every cent.

According to PTI, Mohanlall stated, “It’s not a scam, and I am not a scammer. My company faced tremendous challenges. Late last year, I had nine cancellations and notified each couple they would receive a full refund. However, I couldn’t repay them promptly because my partners withdrew in October.”

One victim recounted the embarrassment he and his fiancée felt when they had to cancel their wedding and start saving again to plan a new date for later this year. “Her actions significantly impacted our plans, and what was meant to be our dream day has turned into an event where we must settle for what we can afford,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov criticises India restriction, says leak networks shifted to other apps

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has responded to India’s temporary restriction on the platform ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, arguing that the move affected ordinary users without stopping alleged leak networks.

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has criticised India’s decision to temporarily restrict access to the messaging platform, arguing that the move failed to curb alleged exam leak operations and instead affected millions of legitimate users.

The restriction was imposed ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination as authorities sought to prevent the spread of leaked exam-related material and disrupt networks allegedly involved in malpractice.

In a public response, Durov said the action had inconvenienced a large number of users across India while those responsible for sharing leaked content had simply migrated to alternative platforms.

According to Durov, restricting access to Telegram did not eliminate the problem authorities were trying to address. He claimed that groups involved in distributing exam-related leaks quickly shifted their activities elsewhere, raising questions about the effectiveness of platform-specific restrictions.

The temporary curbs were announced by the government in the lead-up to the NEET-UG re-test scheduled for June 21. Officials said the move was aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the examination process following concerns about the circulation of leaked material online.

The restriction is currently expected to remain in place until June 22.

Durov also stressed that millions of Indian users rely on Telegram for communication, education, business activities and community engagement. He argued that measures targeting an entire platform can have wider consequences for users who have no connection to alleged wrongdoing.

The government’s action came amid broader efforts to prevent cheating and malpractice in competitive examinations. Authorities have been closely monitoring digital platforms and messaging services after reports that exam-related content was being circulated through online channels.

The debate has sparked discussions about how governments and technology platforms should balance examination security with access to digital communication services. While officials maintain that strong measures are necessary to protect the fairness of high-stakes examinations, critics argue that restrictions on entire platforms may not effectively stop determined offenders.

For now, Telegram remains at the centre of the discussion as authorities continue efforts to ensure a fair and secure conduct of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

India spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has weighed in on the controversy involving young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following India A’s dramatic Super Over defeat to Sri Lanka A in the ongoing Tri-Nation Series.

The incident occurred after the match in Dambulla, where tempers flared between Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka A cricketer Vishen Halambage. Reports indicated that comments were directed at the Indian batters as they headed back towards the dressing room after the game, leading to a heated exchange.

Video footage from the aftermath showed Sooryavanshi confronting Halambage before the two players briefly came into physical contact. Other Sri Lanka A players intervened and prevented the situation from escalating further.

Speaking about the matter, Bahutule described the episode as unfortunate and stressed that such situations can be avoided with greater discipline on the field. He expressed confidence that coaching staff from both teams would ensure similar incidents do not recur.

The coach also suggested that players on both sides should be educated about appropriate conduct during high-pressure matches, highlighting the importance of maintaining respect and sportsmanship even in intense competitive situations.

The altercation has sparked debate among cricket followers, with differing opinions emerging over the actions of the players involved. The incident came at the end of a tense contest that saw Sri Lanka A defeat India A in a Super Over after a closely fought encounter.

The young Sooryavanshi, regarded as one of India’s most promising batting talents, has attracted significant attention in recent months. However, the focus after the Dambulla match shifted from cricketing performances to player behaviour, prompting reactions from officials and coaches.

With the tournament continuing, attention is expected to return to on-field performances as both teams look ahead to their remaining fixtures.
