Kannappa box office: Vishnu Manchu’s mythological film opens with strong collections despite controversies

Kannappa, starring Vishnu Manchu, gains spotlight for the cameo appearances of Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, and Mohanlal, amid pre-release controversies and censor cuts.

Vishnu Manchu’s ambitious film Kannappa released worldwide on June 27, 2025, and early reactions from audiences highlight the cameos of Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, and Mohanlal as major crowd-pleasers. The mythological action-drama, inspired by Srikalahasti Mahatyam and Basava Puranam, has been presented with high production values and a stellar ensemble cast, including these major names in Indian cinema in special roles.

The film was marred by controversy before its release, with the censor board recommending 13 scene edits and demanding the replacement of several objectionable words such as “Pilaka”, “Gilaka”, “Chavata” and “Neecha Jati”. The CBFC cited that the movie leaned more toward violence than devotion, eventually awarding it a U/A 13+ certificate.

To address these concerns and to avoid post-release backlash, the filmmakers added a disclaimer upfront, clarifying that the story is an adaptation of historical literary texts and cinematic liberties have been taken. The team also made it known that the chief priest of Srikalahasti temple was consulted, and his permission was obtained for the narrative’s portrayal.

In anticipation of criticism, the makers issued a public caution, warning that any distortion or defamatory acts against the film or its stakeholders would face legal action. The official statement emphasized that the film was made responsibly and urged critics to watch the film in full context before making judgments.

Social media buzz suggests that while Vishnu Manchu’s performance has received mixed feedback, audiences have widely appreciated the cameo appearances by Prabhas, Mohanlal, and Akshay Kumar, calling them the “best part of the film.”
