Kolkata custom department detains man for carrying Rs 32 lakh inside Pan Masala pouches

The Kolkata Customs Department nabbed a man on Sunday for smuggling over Rs 32 lakhs to Bangkok. The man was detained by the Kolkata customs’ Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) after the dollar bills were detected in his checked-in baggage.

During the check-in, the authorities recovered $40,000 (Rs. 32,78,000) sealed inside the Pan Masala sachets. Two ten-dollar bills were inserted in each packet, which was stuffed to the brim in a large bag.

Now, a video of the same is doing rounds on social media, in which an officer can be seen tearing a packet of Shuddh Plus Pan Masala. Each packet contained two dollar bills wrapped in polythene. The man concealed the dollars in a large trolley bag by folding them into transparent plastic pouches to avoid being caught.

The custom department has sent the man into 14 days of judicial custody. A case has been registered against him under Section 104 (power to arrest) under the Customs Act, 1962.

Subcategory 1 of Section 104 states, that if an officer of customs empowered on this behalf by general or special order of the Commissioner of Customs has reason to believe that any person in India or within the Indian customs waters has committed an offense punishable under Section 132, Section 133, Section 135 or Section 135A, or Section 136, he may arrest such a person and shall, as soon as may be, inform him of the grounds for such an arrest.

This is not the first time anyone has tried unique ways to hide smuggling from the custom department. Earlier, a man from the Maldives was caught at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport with over half a kilogram of gold paste concealed in his rectum.

The customs officials became suspicious due to his unusual travel patterns and wobbly walk. The authorities put him through a full-body scan, which revealed gold that was hidden inside of him.

The flight took off from Miami in USA and was on its maiden entry to the Argentina airport on May 25, when the incident took place.

As per reports, it is not being as something new as the combat pilots of Argentina are trained to fly at the ultra low level but aviation experts said termed this maneuver to be very aggressive taking the altitude, weather considerations and most importantly the size of the aircraft into consideration.

Some reports said, that as the pilots flew it all the way from the US, the fatigue of the pilot may be a factor for pulling off this stunt.

The video has now taken all over the internet gathering mixed reactions to it. While some aviation enthusiasts were thrilled by the performance, some criticised the act.

A user found the sound of the engine that throttled up just before the turn to be very cool. While another user asked if that was safe to do or not?
