Marvel fans can finally revisit the morally complex world of Thunderbolts, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entry that is now headed for digital release. Beginning July 1, the film will be available for streaming and rental on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

This release arrives nearly two months after Thunderbolts premiered in theatres on May 2. Known for its gritty narrative and anti-hero focus, the film was later rebranded in some marketing campaigns as The New Avengers, hinting at Marvel Studios’ evolving storyline directions.

A darker MCU chapter hits home screens

Directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson, Thunderbolts deviates from the traditional superhero tropes, delving into layered emotions and psychological tension. The film assembles a cast of lesser-highlighted but fan-favourite characters for a mission filled with danger, introspection, and blurred moral lines.

As per the official synopsis, the story follows a group of anti-heroes brought together by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) for a covert mission. As they confront their troubled pasts, they must work through treacherous circumstances to determine whether they’re headed toward redemption or destruction.

Star-studded ensemble cast

The cast includes:

  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes
  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • David Harbour as Red Guardian
  • Wyatt Russell as John Walker
  • Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost
  • Lewis Pullman as Sentry

Supporting roles are filled by Olga Kurylenko, Wendell Pierce, and Chris Bauer, adding depth to the already intense storyline.

Despite being the eighth-highest-grossing movie of 2025, Thunderbolts underperformed relative to expectations, earning $381 million globally against a production budget of $180 million. The rebranding to The New Avengers appeared to be part of a broader strategy to reposition the film’s identity within the MCU narrative.

Now with its OTT release, audiences have the chance to revisit or newly experience Marvel’s take on flawed heroes and dark missions, possibly reshaping opinions on the film’s place in the larger cinematic arc.
