Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers to meet in New York after Pak PM’s Imran’s letter

Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers

A meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the government said on Thursday.

This comes in response to a letter from Prime Minister Imran Khan to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking such a meeting.

“I can confirm that on the request of the Pakistani side, a meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will take place on the sidelines of UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told the media in New Delhi.

India made it clear the meeting would not amount to resumption of bilateral dialogue or any change on its stated position on cross-border terrorism. The MEA spokesperson was at pains to play down the diplomatic significance of the meet and clarifying that much should not be read into the meeting.

“This is just a meeting, too much should not be read into the proposed meeting,” Kumar said. “This is not a resumption of dialogue. They asked for a meeting, we said ‘yes’.”

He added: “I must distinguish between a meeting and a dialogue. This does not indicate any change in policy as far as our stand on cross-border terrorism is concerned.”

“We have not finalised the agenda for the meeting,” Raveesh Kumar said.

Swaraj will leave for New York on September 24. She and Qureshi are heading the delegations of their countries to the UN General Assembly. The two foreign ministers will attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) foreign ministers lunch and get-together on September 27.

The government said that the date for the meeting of both the foreign ministers (Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mahmood Qureshi) is being finalised by permanent missions of the two countries in New York.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan had written to PM Narendra Modi Modi asking that India and Pakistan resume dialogue that has been suspended since 2015. Khan had proposed a meeting between the foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UNGA meeting as he batted for the two sides to resume the comprehensive dialogue to discuss all contentious issues.

Significantly, Khan wrote: “Pakistan remains ready to discuss terrorism.”

While endorsing Modi’s suggestion for “constructive engagement”, Khan acknowledged that the two countries have “an undeniably challenging relationship”. The two sides, he added, should peacefully resolve all outstanding issues, including Kashmir, to bridge differences.

Khan suggested Swaraj and Qureshi could “explore the way forward”, including the holding of the stalled Saarc Summit, which would “offer an opportunity for (Modi) to visit Pakistan and for us to restart the stalled dialogue process”.

This will be the first such high-level contact between the two sides since India snapped all formal talks with Pakistan following the terror attack on Pathankot airbase in 2016.

A video went viral where Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif’s clumsiness made Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin burst into a laugh at the 22nd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at Samarkand.

In the video, the Pakistan’s prime minister can be seen struggling to put on his ear piece as the device couldn’t be placed on Sharif’s ears, after which he asked for help. As the dialogue between the nations commenced, Sharif’s earpiece again fell from his ears which made the Russian president slip out an audible chuckle.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, since then, has been subjected to a lot of flak on social media where, largely the workers of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, proclaimed that the incident was an embarrassment for the country.

After Covid-19 impacting everything and forcing everything onto virtual platforms, the SCO 2022 summit was the first in-person meet in SCO history. The summit will witness the attendants of eight member nations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The SCO is the successor to the Shanghai Five, a mutual security agreement formed in 1996 between the People’s Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and later on was expanded to Pakistan, India and Iran subsequently.

During the dialogue between Russia and Pakistan, Putin expressed to the Pakistan’s Prime Minister that Russia is ready to extend gas supply to Pakistan as the necessary infrastructures have are already established. Russia and Pakistan have other ambitious projects in the pipeline, largely in the energy sector.

Another video of a similar nature went viral back in January where Prime minister Narendra Modi abruptly paused his speech at the virtual world economic forum 2022. In the video, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was delivering his speech but he suddenly paused as he asked the facilitator if he was audible.

Many believe the abrupt stop at the prime minister’s speech was caused due to a teleprompter issue. The prime minister was trolled and scrutinized by the opposition as the hashtag Teleprompter PM trended in twitter.
