Lord Ganesha

The grand festival Ganesh Chaturthi begins today. To celebrate the birth of the elephant-headed lord, the auspicious festival is observed across India every year. Lord Ganesha is believed to be the God of wisdom and wealth. This Hindu festival is observed for 10-11 days and falls in the Bhadra month.

This year, the festival starts on September 10 and will end on September 21. the 11-day long celebration is known as Ganesh Mahotsav. Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major festivals of Maharashtra and is also widely celebrated in states like Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, and Gujarat.

Ganesha is also known as Gajanana, Vighnaharta, and Vinayaka. He is given farewell on Anant Chaturdashi and devotees immerse idols in water bodies like lakes or rivers.

On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi 2021, here are 5 life lessons to learn from Lord Ganesha:

Be respectful towards your parents:

You might have heard about the story of a challenge given to Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Their parents asked them to run around the world three times and whoever wins would get a fruit that would give them immortality and supreme wisdom. Lord Kartikeya left on his vehicle, a peacock. Ganesha instead ran around his parents three times and said that they are his world.

One must forgive those who are guilty:

Once Lord Ganesha was mocked by the moon for overeating and bloating. It infuriated Ganesha and he cursed the moon that it will not be visible to anyone from that moment of time. However, Ganesha forgave him after the moon felt guilty and apologised. Ganesha could not take the curse back and reduced it by saying the moon will be invisible once a month.

Never give up:

When Vyasa asked Ganesha to write Mahabharata, he agreed on the condition that he would keep writing non-stop. The two sat down to write but Lord Ganesha’s pen broke while he was still writing. Lord Ganesha broke one of his tusks and continued writing the epic. He sacrificed his own tusk to finish the task that was assigned to him. This inspiring story also teaches sacrifice.

Duty should not be compromised:

Once Goddess Parvati asked his son Ganesha to stand outside and guard her while she took bath. When Lord Shiva came, despite the fact that He is his father, Ganesha stopped him at the entrance. His father got enraged at cut off his head. Even though Ganesha lost his head, he never gave up on his duty.

Your self-respect matters:

Lord Ganesha was once tricked into taking care of Swarglok as other deities were embarrassed by his elephant head. After realising the truth, He made a clever plan. Ganesha sent his rat, Gajasur, to dig up the roads that lead to Goddess Laxmi’s abode. The deities failed to proceed further and called for help. A farmer who was crossing by the road decided to help the deities. He chanted Lord Ganesha’s name and pulled out the carriage stuck in the first attempt. He explained Lord Ganesha’s is the Remover of Obstacles. This made the deities realise their mistake and they apologised to Lord Ganesha.
