World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 every year. This day is observed to spread awareness and promote the global commitment to prevent suicide. According to the World Health Organization, every 40 seconds, someone ends their life and that accounts for more than 800,000 individuals per year worldwide.

What are the early signs of a suicidal person?

The early signs that you can notice in a suicidal person are as follows:

Sudden Calmness

Sudden calmness after feeling sad or depressed. In this, a person calm themselves and stop expressing their emotions, they also pretend to be all fine because they have decided to end their life.

Withdrawal and isolation

When a person starts isolating and starts withdrawing from all the social activities, this is a sign of depression and it is known as one of the leading causes of suicide. You can identify this sign as a person says no to activities that they enjoy earlier.

Self-harm and dangerous behaviour

A person starts to try self-harm and dangerous things as they stop valuing their life. They start engaging in unprotected sex, rash driving, starts drinking alone and excessive use of drugs.

Some recent trauma

If a person recently lost their job or loved ones, then they might have mixed feelings and they start thinking of killing themselves.

Talking about suicide

Even if someone jokingly says that they don’t want to live anymore or they have the urge to kill themselves, it should be taken seriously as this is an outright threat.

However, if you are feeling suicidal or having thought of killing yourself, you should know that those who go don’t feel the pain, it is just the people who stay behind that suffer. Also, there are non-judgemental helplines that you can contact as they will help you to fight through this. All these helplines are non-judgemental and non-critical, they just listen to you. Apart from this, this caller’s identity is never revealed and none of the calls is shared.
