Shatila Ekadashi is observed on the 11th day of the Krishna Paksha. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls during the Magh month. This day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Also, devotees observe a fast on this day. It is also known as Magh Krishna Ekadashi and Tilda Ekadashi.

  1. Taking bath in water mixed with sesame seeds holds great significance on this day. Besides this, til is consumed by devotees on Shattila Ekadashi.
  2. Devotees keep a fast on this day. They refrain themsleves from eating or drinking on this auspicious day.
  3. Also, partial fasting is also allowed on this day. It is applicable on those who can’t keep complete fasts on this day.
  4. The statue of Lord Vishnu is bathed in Panchamrit. In this bath, sesame seeds are also mixed.
  5. Devotee also made offerings to please Lord Vishnu on this day.
  6. The devotees chant Lord Vishnu’s name with immense devotion whole night to please Lord Vishnu.

On this auspicious day, devotees specifically avoid consuming grains, rice, and pulses.

What is the story behind the fast?

Once upon a time, there lived a rich old lady who used to donate valuable products, clothes, and a lot of money to charity. She had never donated food which is considered one of the most important and significant parts of charity.

Therefore, Lord Krishna decided to teach her a lesson. He came to her house in the disguise of a beggar. Then, he asked the lady for some food. Thereafter, the lady denied to give him food. She dropped a ball of clay in his begging bowl. Then, the lady went back to her house. She was shocked to see all the food materials in her house turned into clay. As a result, she starved for food for many years and her health kept deteriorating.

Then, at one night Lord Krishna appeared in her dreams. He asked her to donate food to the poor and do Shatilla Ekadashi Vrat to get rid of this pain. The same was done by her. Then, she was relieved of the curse that was given by Lord Krishna.
