FIFA U-17 World Cup: On expected lines, India’s maiden WC tour ends in heartbreak

India-Ghana

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After yesterday’s 4-0 loss to Ghana, India’s chief coach Luis Norton de Matos was honest in admitting that the match result was on expected lines.

In a wretchedly-speculated end for India’s first tour of an International football tournament, the young Men in Blue encountered their biggest defeat in the last group match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Having earned direct qualification by virtue of being the hosts, India’s performance was quite as per as expected by the experts, as the hosts U-17 team lost all the three matches in the very primary stage of the World Cup.

And after yesterday’s 4-0 loss to Ghana, the team’s chief coach Luis Norton de Matos didn’t come up with any excuses, admitting that the match result was on expected lines.

Admitting that the young Indians were physically finished by the first 45 minutes, Matos said, “After two hard games, it was complicated to play a side like Ghana. African teams at this age-group level are very tough. Ghana was the toughest team and today difference was very big. Our best chance was in the first two games.”

“There was no energy left in them to match that pace in the second half. If they had to play one more match, they couldn’t have played as they didn’t have any energy left. But this Ghana team can play eight such games with same intensity,” he added.

Though the Indian side started in an aggressive tone in the first half of their final match at the World Cup, Ghana skipper Eric Ayiah managed to score a goal in the 43rd minute. However, India couldn’t stand Ghana’s attack in the second half, as Aiyah scored his second goal at 52nd minute and second half substitutes Richard Danso and Emmanuel Toku continued their attack with goals at 86th and 87th minutes respectively.

And in a frank assessment towards the young India’s performance against Ghana, the team’s coach Eric Fabino said, “We could have scored more but I am happy with it. They didn’t pose any threat and didn’t come to the party like other matches. We played fast-paced football and India couldn’t cope with it.”

However, Matos stayed satisfied with the Indian team’s performance, even after the team conceding nine goals in three matches.

“Would love to see how senior India teams perform against senior teams of these countries! Had it been Nepal, Bhutan or Maldives, it could be different. But I am proud of this team and we need to invest in them,” said Matos.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Preity Zinta praises Rohit Sharma, calls him powerhouse of talent

Published

Just over two weeks after Preity Zinta denied rumors that she wanted Rohit Sharma to lead the Punjab Kings, the owner of PBKS took to social media platform X to praise the former Mumbai Indians captain. Zinta answered questions from her fans and described Rohit as a powerhouse of talent, suggesting that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to nominate him as PBKS leader in the future.

However, for the Hitman, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 hasn’t gone as expected. The Mumbai Indians are virtually out of the playoff race, which means that Rohit’s squad will likely be eliminated early. This season, some MI players have failed, and even Rohit’s performances haven’t been enough to improve the team’s morale. Even though Rohit is clearly going through difficult circumstances, Bollywood actor and co-owner of the Punjab Kings Preity Zinta had nothing but love for him.

With just three wins in their last eleven matches, the Mumbai Indians are currently in the bottom of the points table and their only option is to move up the standings when they win against Sunrisers Hyderabad today.

Hardik Pandya’s team has lost eight of their 11 games this season, so far, making it seem nearly impossible for them to have things their way given how their campaign has started out. In the majority of their games, they have been unable to put up a cohesive performance and have lost games despite dominating one area of the game.

The Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the other two of the original eight clubs that have never claimed an IPL championship, along with Zinta’s PBKS. In 16 years have PBKS made only twice to the Playoffs; their best performance came in 2015, when they were runner-up to Kolkata Knight Riders. Even though it can be excruciatingly difficult to wait for an elusive IPL victory, Zinta manages to remain positive.

T20 World Cup: Co-host West Indies receives terror threat from Pakistan

Cricket West Indies (CWI) CEO Jonny Graves said that the safety and security of everyone at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is their number one priority.

North Pakistan had issued a terror threat against the West Indies, who are co-hosting the T20 World Cup today, May 6. However, West Indies (CWI) assured the public that every safety measure has been done.

The Caribbean islands have received warnings about possible terror threats coming from North Pakistan, according to a trustworthy source with firsthand knowledge of the circumstances. From June 1 to June 29, the US and the West Indies will host the T20 World Cup.

World Cup matches in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago will take place in the West Indies. In addition, there are matches in the US cities of Florida, New York, and Texas; however, there appears to be no danger to the games in the US. Barbados will host the final after the two semifinals are held in Trinidad and Guyana.

A source said that they are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining close communication with relevant authorities. Continuous evaluation of security measures is underway to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any identified risks, they added.

The severity of the problem has increased with the assignment of blame for the danger to IS Khorasan. Trinidad Prime Minister Keith Rowley said that security forces have protocols in place to handle any threats to matches.

As per the report, the Barbados regional security officials are monitoring potential threats to the ICC event in addition to the fact that intelligence of a potential threat to the World Cup has been received through Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) through the media group Nashir Pakistan.

Regarding India, the Men in Blue will face off against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York in their season-opening match. On June 9, they will play their next game at the same location against their bitter rivals, Pakistan. The team captained by Rohit Sharma will play the United States in their subsequent game in New York, and then they will play Canada in their last group-stage encounter at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida.

Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders created history on Sunday during the IPL 2024 match played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket stadium in Lucknow as it became the first team to reach a score of 200-plus runs in a T20 match played at the 50,000 seater stadium in Lucknow.

Sunil Narine smashed 81 runs off 39 balls and posted a total of 235 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. He thrashed the Lucknow Super Giants bowlers all over the park for fun, hitting 6 fours and 7 sixes. In defense of the huge total, Narine returned figures of 1 for 22 in his 4 overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the KKR bowlers with figures of 3 for 24 in 3.1 overs as LSG were restricted for 137 runs.

The Lucknow Super Giants innings did not really take off. KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis forged a 50 run partnership off 33 balls but it was not enough to cause serious problems for Kolkata Knight Riders. Once the partnership was broken, the LSG innings collapsed as the last 9 wickets fell for 67 runs, as the required rate went out of control.

Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana took 3 wickets each. Andre Russell took 2. And Ramandeep took 2 catches; the first catch was one of the most spectacular of the IPL season. Salt played aggressively, hitting 24 runs off the first 9 balls he faced. But he was soon out for 32 runs off 14 deliveries, and from then onwards, it was the Sunil Narine show.

The Kolkata Knight Riders has moved past the Rajasthan Royal to reach the 1st position in the IPL points table. Kolkata Knight Riders has total of 16 points from 11 matches played so far and their net run rate (+1.453) is better than Rajasthan Royals (+0.622).
