As FIFA 2022 World Cup kicked off in Qatar on Sunday, the fans were waiting for their favourite to take the stage and deliver. However, Messi-led Argentina didn’t start off their group stage match of the FIFA 2022 World Cup on an ideal note as they failed to revive themselves in after Saudi Arabia surprised Lionel Messi and company. Even though this is not how it should have ended, it always does. His hunched posture, that aloof look, and that dejected scowl by the end of the match represented Argentina’s mood after the defeat.
Argentina being among the tournament favourites, specially due to it being Lionel Messi’s last World Cup, couldn’t revive themselves after Saudi Arabia’s side surprised the Argentinians with a goal that tied the game. The Green Falcons didn’t stop their as they found another in the opening minutes of the second half.

Argentina, despite the upset, did try to put the game to sleep in the first half, however, were stopped by the offside flag thrice which disallowed three goals for the Argentinian side.
Messi converted the penalty in the starting minutes of the game whereas the Saudi Arabian side with the help of Saleh Al-Shehri tied the score three minutes into the second half and Salem Al-Dawsari scored a stunning goal to give Saudi Arabia the lead. They played outstanding defence, denying Argentina any additional chances as they easily won 2-1.
Argentina was on a winning spree since 2019
Argentina came into the competition as the second-most favoured, after Brazil, and was in the midst of a 36-game winning streak that began in 2019. This run includes a victory over Brazil in the 2021 Copa America competition, giving Lionel Messi his first significant international medal.
Despite the fact that this Argentina team lacked the star power of earlier Argentina teams, it was simple to predict that they would win the competition given their current form. The midfield and defence were strong, and Messi is still among the finest players in the world up front.
Three goals were disallowed for Argentina
In the first half, Argentina scored four goals, but three of them were disallowed due to offsides violations.
With a definite strategy going into the match, Saudi Arabia aimed to play a high defensive line and try to catch Argentina off guard. It can be a dangerous tactic; Lautaro Martinez’s goal was overturned even though he was just slightly offside.
However, the plan ultimately was successful. Seven times in the first half and three more times in the second were offside for Argentina. Nine corner kicks and over 70 per cent of the possession went to Argentina. However, failing to score in front of goal when the team was onside cost the game.
