What is werewolf syndrome? Everything you need to know about the rare condition diagnosed in 17-year-old Madhya Pradesh boy

A 17-year-old boy from the Nandleta village of Madhya Pradesh recently shared about his rare condition, werewolf syndrome.

The teenager, Lalit Paidar, took the internet by storm after his pictures went crazy viral. Reports said the uncommon illness is known as hypertrichosis and the boy’s body is covered with hair.

In an interview with a leading daily, Lalit said his classmates refer to him as a monkey boy and are afraid of him fearing he will bite them. Reports further said the teenager was diagnosed with werewolf syndrome at the age of six. The doctor also informed that since the Middle Ages, only 50 people have been reported to have had this condition.

What is werewolf syndrome?

Contrary to hirsutism, which is excessive hair growth in women with a male-pattern distribution, hypertrichosis is excessive hair growth that is above and beyond what is normal for the person’s age, sex, and race. The occurrence of hypertrichosis might affect the entire body or only certain areas of the body.

Types

Congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa:
The whole body surface except the mucosae, palms, and soles, is covered in abundant lanugo hair that since birth.

Congenital hypertrichosis terminalis:
In this state, abnormal hair growth begins at birth and continues throughout a person’s life.

Acquired hypertrichosis:
The development of lanugo-type aberrant hair growth is often limited to the skin of the face and neck however other places may also be affected.

Naevoid hypertrichosis:
It is the condition in which excessive hair growth can be seen anywhere on the body in either males or females.

Causes

Congenital hypertrichosis may occur as a result of gene inheritance if a family history of congenital hypertrichosis may exist. It appears to be brought on by abnormally active hair-growth-stimulating genes. These genes become active during pregnancy in persons with congenital hypertrichosis.

If hypertrichosis exclusively affects certain areas of the body, it might be caused by chronic skin disorders like lichen simplex, which is known to cause recurrent rashes, itching, and scratching on a specific area of skin.

Apart from this, there may be other reasons behind the cause like,

  • malnutrition
  • poor diet or certain eating disorders
  • side effects of certain drugs and medications
  • cancer and cell mutation
  • skin diseases

Symptoms

  • inflamed gums
  • missing tooth
  • intellectual defect
  • epileptic seizure
  • features of malformation
  • issues in eyes, heart, bones, and kidneys

Treatment

There is no proper treatment for this syndrome but shaving, chemical epilation, waxing, plucking and hair bleaching are the ways to reduce the irritation caused by excessive hair growth.

Media reports indicate that the city recorded 0.9 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning. While the current spell of rain is expected to weaken and move away gradually, leading to a slight rise in temperature from Monday, experts emphasize that no heatwave conditions are anticipated in Delhi during the first week of June.

Widespread rain across states; disruptions in hilly terrains

The impact of the changing weather systems is visible across multiple states. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph for Delhi-NCR, alongside localized heavy showers in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Furthermore, severe thunderstorm activity with squally winds up to 90 kmph has been predicted over northwest, central, and adjoining eastern regions of India.

In Gujarat, scattered to isolated rainfall and thunderstorms are projected over the next six days due to the active weather systems. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is making steady progress, with the weather office indicating its potential advancement into parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu over the next three to four days.

While the plains enjoy a break from the scorching heat, the sudden weather transition caused temporary complications in the hill states. In Uttarakhand, a heavy downpour and adverse weather conditions led to the brief suspension of the Kedarnath Yatra, leaving hundreds of pilgrims stranded before the restrictions were lifted later in the day. Conversely, the cooler mountain breeze and pre-monsoon showers have triggered a massive influx of tourists to Shimla, as people flock from high-temperature states like Gujarat to seek comfort in the hills.
