Former India cricketer Saba Karim has questioned the failure of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to monitor the fitness of fast bowlers in India. His argument comes at a time when several fast bowlers, including India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, are recovering from injuries.

For those who don’t know, Bumrah has been out of the team for a long time due to a back injury. He missed two major tournaments due to injury. These include the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup 2022 and naming several bilateral series amid these big tournaments doesn’t even make it to the cut.

Apart from them, the famous bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Yash Dayal have also joined the list of fast bowlers struggling with injury. Deepak Chahar and Harshal Patel have also made comebacks recently after being sidelined due to injury for a long time. Shardul Thakur was also absent from India’s playing XI against New Zealand on Sunday, which was called off due to rain. Before the match, Shardul was seen warming up but was under the close supervision of a support staff.

Sharing his views on Team India’s fast bowling to a sports website, Saba Karim said that as far as he knows, it is the work of the National Cricket Academy, which sits with the team management and selectors and comes up with a pool of 10-12 fast bowlers. They also shortlist the needs of NCA to guide fast bowlers and to keep an eye on his fitness. He further revealed that its NCA that focuses on the workload management of the bowlers, so that the players are available whenever the team needs them.

But is near past that did not seems to happen. Saba said that it is difficult to say, but India definitely has young fast bowlers, who can bowl well. While Karim admitted that recent injuries have been a cause of concern, he also pointed out that there is no dearth of fast bowling talent in the country and went on to name a few. He said you can count them on your fingre tips as there are just four-five names.

Elaborating further Saba named them and said Kuldeep Sen, selected for Bangladesh tour can bowl at a speed of 140 kilometers per hour. There are also Avesh Khan and Shivam Mavi, who play for UP and has seen him clicking on 140 in domestic cricket. Karthik Tyagi had impressed as a net bowler during the tour of Australia. Khaleel Ahmed has also bowled very well in the IPL. But these questions and doubts raised by Saba Karim have raised concerned and has brought to light some facts that have been doing rounds in everyone’s minds as well.

The former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni, hasn’t yet announced his retirement plan or whether he plans to continue his career in the IPL, but a CSK official has revealed a message Dhoni gave to the management.

CSK was eliminated from IPL 2024 after a defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league match on Saturday. Both teams had 14 points each, but due to a higher net-run rate, RCB led by Faf du Plessis qualified for the playoffs. CSK fans were sad not only about the defeat of their team but also about the fact that they might see MS Dhoni for the last time in the IPL. However, a CSK official has revealed that he hasn’t commented on his potential retirement.

The unnamed CSK official revealed that Dhoni has requested that the team management hold off on any decisions regarding his retirement for a few months. He said that Dhoni himself hasn’t reached a conclusion and might be considering another season.

The official also mentioned that Dhoni felt comfortable with his running between the wickets during the IPL, a key concern for some fans regarding his age. Additionally, the introduction of the impact player rule in IPL 2024 might influence Dhoni’s decision. This rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player during the second strategic break, potentially offering Dhoni a more specific role within the team that is less physically demanding.

With Dhoni maintaining his silence and the possibility of the ‘Impact Player’ rule working in his favour, CSK fans might not have seen the last of their beloved captain just yet. The official said that the management would wait for Dhoni’s message on the topic and added that MS Dhoni has always had the best interests of the team in mind.
