Maharashtra: Severe waterlogging in Nagpur, central forces deployed for rescue operations

Maharashtra’s Nagpur city witnessed severe waterlogging after incessant rains in the area. Heavy rains lashed Nagpur city from Friday midnight, inundating low-lying areas and prompting measures to shift people from these pockets to safer places.

Many areas such as Canal Road Ramdaspeth, Ambajhari Lake area witnessed severe waterlogging. As per the weather department, Nagpur airport recorded 106 mm of rainfall till 5.30 am.

The National Disaster Response Force also carried out flood water rescue operations and safely evacuated six people in the Ambajhari Lake area in the city. According to reports, after overnight heavy rains, the administration declared a holiday for schools as a precautionary measure.

In addition, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has also issued helpline numbers for citizens and advised people not to step out of their homes unless for important work. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, took to X, formerly Twitter to share that he is continuously monitoring the rain situation in the city.

Devendra Fadnavis asserted that Ambazari lake has overflowed due to heavy rains in Nagpur last night and water has entered some areas. He added that the collector informed him that there was more than 100 mm of rain in just 4 hours. He further affirmed that Nagpur Collector, Municipal Commissioner have reached the spot and necessary measures are being taken immediately. 

The Deputy Chief Minister continued that instructions have been given that the citizens stuck in the low-lying areas should be helped first. He noted that one team of NDRF and two teams of SDRF have been deployed for rescue operations. He also affirmed that they are constantly in touch with the administration and are monitoring the situation.

The Nagpur centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted severe and moderate thunderstorms with lightning which will likely continue at isolated places in Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia districts. It noted that there is also a possibility of intense rain at isolated places in these areas. 

The weather department underlined that light to moderate rainfall is expected to take place at multiple places in Wardha and some parts of Chandrapur, Bhandara and Gondia districts. Furthermore, light rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Amravati, Yavatmal and Gadchiroli, it added.

Four members of Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang were arrested by the Navi Mumbai Police on Saturday. The gang was preparing to attack Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s car in Panvel.

The report stated that a purchase for guns from a Pakistani arms dealer was planned. More than seventeen people, including Lawrence Bishnoi, Anmol Bishnoi, Sampat Nehra, and Goldy Brar, are the subject of a first information report. The police stated that more investigation is being conducted.

According to police officials, the accused who were apprehended include Dhananjay, also known as Ajay Kashyap, Waspi Khan, also known as Wasim Chikna, Rizwan Khan, also known as Javed Khan, and Gaurav Bhatia, also known as Nahvi.

This comes months after on April 14, two men riding bikes opened fire outside Khan’s Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, Mumbai. Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal were later taken into custody in Gujarat. On April 26, Anuj Thapan, another accused, along with a third person accused in in the same case were taken into custody in Punjab. However, on May 1, the third accused, Thapan, passed away inside the crime branch lock-up of the Mumbai police.

Salman Khan’s security has been heightened to Y-Plus since November 2022 as a result of threats from gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar. Khan has reportedly purchased a new armored vehicle for increased safety and been given permission to carry a personal pistol.

Following the receipt of a threatening email at the actor’s office in March of last year, the Mumbai Police filed an official complaint (FIR) under Indian Penal Code sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 506-II (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) against gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar as well as an additional individual.

The FIR was based on a complaint that a man named Prashant Gunjalkar filed with the Bandra Police. According to the police, Gunjalkar managed an artist management company and was a frequent visitor to Khan’s Bandra home.

 BJP candidate from Gorakhpur Lok Sabha Ravi Kishan on Saturday arrived at a polling station in Gorakhpur and queued up in the line to cast his vote and emphasised that politicians are servants of the public, not VIPs. Ravi Kishan said that this is what India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taught them that they are servants of the public and are not VIPs.  

Kishan added as soon as PM Modi came, he ended the VIP culture in India by ending the concept of red beacons. He said when one’s head is so grounded, then one should remain a common man too. He said he does not hold any position above others now and prefers to stay humble. The prime minister has ended the VIP culture in India and changed the politics of the country. He emphasized that this is India’s culture and everybody should follow it.

Ravi Kishan said he has cast his vote for Viksit Bharat, Ram Rajya and to make India a Vishwa guru. He took to X and wrote Friends, you all will be aware that today voting is being held in Gorakhpur under the 7th phase of Lok Sabha Elections. On this occasion, he humbly requested everyone, the God-like voters who are the destiny makers of Gorakhpur, to exercise their right to vote in this great festival of democracy by discharging their duty as an aware voter.

He said every vote of theirs is important and it will decide the future of Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat and the country, therefore he once again appealed to everyone to participate enthusiastically in this festival of democracy. Ravi Kishan is contesting against SP’s Kajal Nishad and BSP’s Javed Ashraf in UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s bastion Gorakhpur. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kishan emerged victorious against Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Rambhual Nishad by a margin of 3,01,664 votes.

In a tragic incident, a sudden rockslide trapped several people under falling debris on the Gangotri Highway in Uttarakhand. One person is reported to be dead, while others are injured. The incident took place near Dabrani on the Char Dham Yatra route when large stones tumbled down the hill slopes, striking several cars and other vehicles.

The state police along with SDRF and NDRF teams, arrived at the spot after receiving the information, and initiated the rescue operations. The injured have been transported to Harsil for medical treatment. 

Dr Vikram Mandal, medical officer in-charge at the primary health centre in Harsil, stated that two critically injured individuals are being airlifted to the district hospital. Other injured people will also be referred to the district hospital if needed. Nearly six people sustained injuries from the rockslide. The incident resulted in damage to a private Bolero vehicle, a motorcycle, a Maruti 800, a truck, a JCB machine, and a water tanker. The fire in the mountains is suspected to be the cause of the rockfall.

The Uttarakhand police shared a video of the accident site on social media platform X, stating that as a precautionary measure, vehicles have been halted, and they will be allowed to proceed once the route is deemed safe.

Another bus accident took place earlier on Friday morning in Silyakar, Uttarkashi. The injured passengers have been transported to Brahmakhal Hospital. THe bus carrying pilgrims was heading to Gangotri, when the incident took place. Around 40 passengers were travelling in the bus. 15 individuals suffered minor injuries. All passengers were from Karnataka.

The Uttarakhand Government had earlier disclosed its comprehensive measures to enhance safety for the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage. They asserted that their top priority was managing frequent landslides in the region. To address the aforesaid issue, JCB machines and heavy equipment were put on standby 24/7, with a dedicated team assigned to monitor high-risk areas for rapid response. 

Additionally, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Rishikesh to conduct a thorough inspection of the Char Dham arrangements, demonstrating the government’s commitment to pilgrims safety and convenience.
