Along with Australia’s batting prodigy Travis Head and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, India’s Mohammed Shami, who finished the recently concluded ICC World Cup as the tournament’s top wicket-taker, has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for November 2023.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released a statement saying, two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 champions and an Indian fast-bowling veteran have made the shortlist for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for November 2023.

November saw Shami continuing on his incredible World Cup performance. At an economy rate of 5.68 and an average of 12.06, he claimed 15 wickets. With 24 wickets from just seven innings, he emerged as the 2023 Cricket World Cup’s top wicket-taker overall. One of his best performances this month was a breathtaking 5/18 at Wankhede versus Sri Lanka. When Shami came at the conclusion of the first Powerplay, Sri Lanka was already struggling in a 358-run chase. He batted through their middle and lower order in his five overs.

At Eden Gardens, a concentrated 2/18 led to South Africa’s destruction. But against New Zealand in the semi-final, the quick bowler was outstanding.

After an extended injury absence from work, Australia’s batting sensation Head made his comeback to the team at the end of October with a magnificent century against New Zealand. He carried on his strong form into November.

He amassed 220 runs at an incredible average of 44 in five One-Day Internationals in November, including a half-century and a century. His performances in the semi-final and final of the Cricket World Cup were noteworthy; he was voted Player of the Match and was instrumental in Australia’s sixth title.

In contrast, in his three ODI matches last month, Australia’s top all-around player Maxwell amassed 204 runs at an average of 204 and a strike rate of 152.23. He also claimed two wickets. During the series against India, he scored a remarkable 116 runs with an astounding strike rate of 207.14 in two Twenty20 Internationals.

Gautam Gambhir still regrets not using SKY to his best potential in KKR

Published

Former Indian cricket player Gautam Gambir has expressed his regret for not utilizing Suryakumar Yadav’s potential during his 10 years tenure as captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He added that the team never managed to use Suryakumar Yadav to his potential.

He further reasoned that Suryakumar Yadav played down the order in several matches because he could play only one player at no. 3, and as a captain, he had to think about the other players in the playing XI. The former KKR captain recalled that Yadav was always willing to contribute to the squad, whether he was benched or played at No. 6 or 7.

Gautam Gambhir said that Suryakumar Yadav, who currently plays for Mumbai Indians in IPL, can perform best accross all formats and is a key player when it comes to ODI. He asserted that the Mumbai Indians player can be dangerous in the ODI format as well. The KKR coach hoped that Yadav will not make himself a one-format player, and keep working hard.

Suryakumar Yadav started his IPL career with Mumbai Indians in 2011 and played a crucial role in winning the trophy that year. In 2014, he was moved to KKR for 4 years where he played under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy. Featuring as a lower middle-order batter in KKR, Suryakumar Yadav showcased his batting prowess, accumulating 608 runs in 54 matches. In 2018, Suryakumar was again bought by Mumbai Indians where he bats at No 3.

Reacting to Gautam Ghambir’s regret for not utilising Suryakumar Yadav to his potential, social media users shared old posts from 2015 in which Gambir appreciated the entire KKR team but especially praised Suryakumar Yadav and asked fans to give him the nickname SKY.

Some X, formerly Twitter users also shared pictures of Gambhir and Suryakumar when they were teammates and played for KKR. They also posted runs scored by Suryakumar Yadav in T20 matches and praised his captaincy in T20 matches against Australia in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma and Vice-captain Hardik Pandya.
