Bharatiya Excellence Awards 2024: Former CJI KG Balakrishnan says national-level commission to protect senior citizens needed

Published

Former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan said on Wednesday that the government should form a national commission to allay the concerns of senior citizens and it should have the powers necessary to take action in the interest of senior citizens.

Addressing the Bharatiya Excellence Awards 2024 organised by APN News and Balaji Foundation in New Delhi, Balakrishnan spoke on the need for such a commission because children and kin do not look after senior citizens even after taking properties and other inheritances from them. Government intervention is required to provide them with economic and medical help by constituting a commission exclusively for them, he added.

The commission should be formed separately from the usual one so that they have the authority to take action against such people and also see if the interests of senior citizens are taken care of, the former CJI added.

Asserting that, he said this can only be possible if the government forms legislation and conducts a study on how other countries have tackled such issues and taking care of their elders, adding that, he said a similar enactment should be there in our country.

Former CJI Balakrishnan brought attention to the increasing life expectancy in the country. He said now longevity has increased, earlier it was about 40-45 and now it is 70-75. He said increasing longevity is a good sign of health but at the same time after the age of 50, the body has inherent medical problems. So, there should be medical help for them, he added. There is no requirement for constant attention but there should be someone, who takes good care of them, he said.

The former CJI said there should be a discussion on such matters and public opinion should be created. He said law is the essence of public opinion. Keeping that in mind, we should create public opinion so that their conditions improve, Balakrishnan said.

He noted that the country is economically moving forward but at the same time, the welfare of the people should also be moving along with it in the country, he added. There should be inclusive growth of all people, the former CJI said.

Earlier, Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai remembered the former Chief Justices of India and noted Balakrishnan’s endeavours in courts. He said social media influencers were being honoured and by honouring them we are also honoured.

Rai gave special thanks to former Noida Authority CEO Devdutt and former law officer of Noida Authority for helping lawyers get land for their flats complex.

He recalled his humbler origins, saying he studied under a tree in a village school which didn’t even have for classrooms. This has been an advantage since he can communicate with people from all walks of life, he said.

Welcoming the gathering, APN News Editor-in-Chief Rajshri Rai said APN News and Balaji Foundation are honouring social media influencers for spreading awareness, positivity and knowledge in society. “The aim of this event is not only to give awards to people but also to make people aware. Most of the people who are going to be honoured are youth, who have done new things on social media and have established their influence. Today we are honouring people, who are engaged in taking this country forward,” she said.

In her complaint, Maliwal accused Arvind Kejriwal’s personal assistant of repeatedly slapping her and kicking her in the stomach and pelvic area when she went to the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence on May 13.

On Saturday, AAP minister Atishi claimed the BJP made Swati Maliwal file the FIR using an old ACB case as leverage. She said Anti Corruption Bureau of the BJP has filed a case against Swati Maliwal regarding the illegal recruitment of contractual employees in Delhi Commission for Women. A chargesheet has been filed and the time of conviction is coming and the AAP party said that it believes that Swati Maliwal is being included in the conspiracy by using this case. Atishi said how the entire machinery of BJP, from Delhi Police to the MHA is working, was seen yesterday in Tis Hazari Court.

On Friday, the Delhi Police took Swati Maliwal to the Delhi chief minister’s residence to recreate the crime scene. Her statement was recorded before a magistrate at the Tis Hazari court. A counter-complaint has been filed by Bibhav Kumar with the Civil Lines police station in which he alleged that Maliwal had forcefully and unauthorised entered the Delhi CM’s residence.

He also claimed that the former Delhi Commission for Women chairperson tried to create a ruckus and assault him. Kejriwal’s aide also claimed that the Rajya Sabha MP intended to harm the AAP chief and he strongly objected. Bibhav Kumar said a copy of the FIR has been sent to all the media houses by the BJP but BJP’s police are saying that they cannot give it to the accused.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has reacted to the viral video, allegedly shot at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. The video shows the Rajya Sabha MP in a heated confrontation with the staff.

Reacting to the viral video on X, formerly Twitter, Swati Maliwal said that like every time, this political hitman has started efforts to save himself.  She was apparently referring to Bibhav Kumar, whom she accused of assaulting her.

The Rajya Sabha MP added that the political hitman is getting his people to tweet and play videos without any context. She added that the truth will be revealed to everyone as soon as the CCTV footage of the house and the room is checked.

She concluded that he may fall to whatever level he can, but God is watching everything, and one day everyone’s truth will come out in front of the world. Earlier, Swati Maliwal has alleged that she was assaulted by the Chief Minister’s personal assistant, Bibhav Kumar, when she sought time to meet the Chief Minister that day.

In the viral video, shared across the social media platforms, Swati Maliwal can be seen engaged in a heated exchange with staff members who are requesting her to exit the drawing room.

In the footage, Bibhav Kumar, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s former PA implicated in the assault allegations, is seen present in the room while other staff are speaking with Swati Maliwal. Additionally, MP Swati Maliwal is also heard issuing a threat to one of the staff members, vowing to ensure their job termination. However, the authenticity of the video remains unverified.

In the formal complaint lodged with the Delhi Police, Swati Maliwal detailed a disturbing sequence of events, alleging that Bibhav Kumar subjected her to multiple instances of physical violence. Maliwal alleged that Bibhav Kumar repeatedly slapped her at least seven to eight times while she continued to cry. She also said that she was dragged and kicked in the chest, stomach, and pelvis area.

The complaint stated that when she entered the office and attempted to reach the Chief Minister’s PA, Bibhav Kumar, she was unable to find him. She then entered the residence and was told to wait in the drawing room, when Bibhav Kumar suddenly entered, shouting and abusing her. The alleged assault took place on May 13, when she visited the Civil Lines residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
