Tanveer Sangha, Australian leg-spinner, in action

Australia has introduced a surprise element in their playing XI for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against India by including young leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha. The Dubai pitch, known for favoring spinners, could play right into the hands of the Jalandhar-born cricketer, who has already made waves in Australia’s domestic circuit.

At just 23, Sangha has become a rising star in Australian cricket, excelling in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Sydney Thunder. With the ability to trouble batters in spin-friendly conditions, he could pose a serious challenge to India, especially considering their struggles against spin in the past.

A cricketing journey from Jalandhar to Sydney

Tanveer Sangha’s journey is an inspiring one. Born in Jalandhar, India, he moved to Sydney at a young age, where his father worked as a taxi driver. Though he briefly played for India at the U-16 level, his cricketing career flourished in Australia. His breakthrough came in the 2020 U-19 World Cup, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 15 scalps.

His talent was soon recognized, earning him the prestigious NSW Cricket Basil Sellers Scholarship, which helped accelerate his rise in Australian cricket. Sangha’s performances in franchise leagues such as Birmingham Phoenix and Washington Freedom have further sharpened his bowling skills.

A key threat in the middle overs

While still in the early stages of his 50-over cricket career, Sangha has already demonstrated his potential. In 14 List A matches, he has taken 16 wickets, maintaining an economy rate of 5.86 and a strike rate of 41.1. His ability to strike at crucial moments, particularly in the middle overs, makes him a crucial weapon in Australia’s arsenal.

As Australia eyes a spot in the Champions Trophy final, all eyes will be on Sangha to see if he can make an impact against India’s formidable batting lineup in the high-stakes clash.
