Pakistan cricket board faces criticism over absence at Champions Trophy 2025 final ceremony

The PCB is being criticized for not having a representative at the Champions Trophy 2025 final presentation. Shoaib Akhtar and former cricketers question the decision.

Champions Trophy 2025 final

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing severe criticism for not having a single representative present during the Champions Trophy 2025 final presentation ceremony in Dubai. As India secured the title by defeating New Zealand by four wickets, the post-match podium was shared by International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny, secretary Devajit Saikia, and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) director Roger Twose.

No PCB presence despite being the host nation

Notably, PCB chief operating officer Sumair Ahmed, who also served as the tournament director, was present in Dubai but was not invited onto the stage for the trophy presentation. According to a report by Telecom Asia Sport, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi did not travel to Dubai due to his commitments as Pakistan’s interior minister. He had informed the ICC about his absence, citing his engagement in a joint parliamentary session in Islamabad, where President Asif Zardari was addressing the nation.

Shoaib Akhtar questions PCB’s absence

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar expressed his disappointment on social media over the PCB’s absence from the stage.

“India has won the ICC Champions Trophy today, but I noticed something strange. Pakistan were the hosts in the tournament, but there were no Pakistan Cricket Board representatives here (at the trophy presentation). This is beyond my understanding. Why was there no one to represent us and give the trophy? Please think about it; it’s a world stage, but sadly I could not see any PCB members. Feeling very down to see that,” said Akhtar in a video posted on X.

Speculations over PCB’s decision

Some former Pakistan cricketers have suggested that the absence of PCB officials at the ceremony could be misinterpreted in India, making it appear as though the PCB chairman avoided the event because of India’s triumph. This speculation has further fueled the controversy.

Pakistan’s poor campaign in its home tournament

The 2025 Champions Trophy was significant for Pakistan, as it was their first ICC event at home in 29 years. However, the hosts had a disappointing campaign, crashing out in the group stage after defeats to New Zealand and India.

While the ICC holds authority over selecting dignitaries for the podium, the exclusion of a PCB representative despite Sumair Ahmed’s presence has raised many eyebrows. The matter has sparked debate within Pakistan’s cricket fraternity, with many questioning the board’s decision-making in such a high-profile global event.

No discussion on Ajit Agarkar’s extension, BCCI clarifies after key meeting absence

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained Ajit Agarkar’s absence from a key meeting and denied that his tenure extension was discussed.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday addressed speculation surrounding chief selector Ajit Agarkar after he was absent from an important meeting involving India’s senior cricket leadership.

The meeting was attended by India captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, BCCI officials and Centre of Excellence director of cricket VVS Laxman. Agarkar, however, was not present either in person or virtually.

His absence led to speculation about his future as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee.

BCCI explains Agarkar’s absence

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said Agarkar was out of station when the meeting was called at short notice.

According to Saikia, Agarkar was in an area where he could not join the meeting online despite making efforts to do so.

Saikia’s clarification came amid reports and speculation over whether Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector could be extended.

No discussion on Agarkar’s extension

Asked whether the BCCI discussed extending Agarkar’s tenure during the meeting, Saikia said there was no such discussion.

He also rejected speculation about VVS Laxman being appointed as the BCCI’s director of cricket, saying the board had neither discussed such a move nor had any intention of doing so.

Agarkar’s tenure marked by key decisions

Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector has included several high-profile decisions involving India’s leadership and squad selection.

One notable decision was the backing of Suryakumar Yadav as a long-term T20I captain ahead of Hardik Pandya.

Another major call involved replacing Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. Both decisions attracted considerable attention and criticism, but Agarkar publicly defended the selection committee’s decisions.

For now, the BCCI has made it clear that Agarkar’s absence from Thursday’s meeting was due to logistical circumstances and that no discussion on extending his tenure took place during the meeting.

Dhruv Jurel’s Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan tattoo steals spotlight after century vs Sri Lanka

Dhruv Jurel celebrated his unbeaten century against Sri Lanka by revealing a ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan’ tattoo and achieved a unique Test record.

Dhruv Jurel marked his century in the second Test against Sri Lanka with a special celebration, revealing a “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan” tattoo on his bicep in Colombo on Monday.

Jurel reached his century after spending 22 deliveries on 99. After taking a risky single to complete the milestone, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter punched the air, removed his helmet and revealed the tattoo as his teammates celebrated.

Jurel remained unbeaten on 115 off 177 deliveries, while his century also saw him achieve a unique feat in Test cricket in Sri Lanka.

Jurel enters record books with century

Jurel became the second Indian batter to score a century from No. 7 or below in a Test match in Sri Lanka.

His unbeaten 115 is also the highest individual score by an Indian batter batting at No. 7 or below in a Test in Sri Lanka, according to the provided match report.

The century also made Jurel the first Indian batter to score a century from No. 7 during a Test series in Sri Lanka. The earlier century mentioned in the report came from Hardik while batting at No. 8.

Jurel seeks Pant’s advice

Jurel also spoke about batting alongside Rishabh Pant and said he regularly seeks advice from the experienced wicketkeeper-batter.

Jurel said Pant’s experience makes his presence valuable, particularly because both players are wicketkeepers who bat in the middle order.

He also explained that he does not try to imitate Pant’s aggressive style. Instead, Jurel focuses on identifying which bowler to attack and deciding which spells he needs to negotiate.

Jurel said he dedicated his second Test century to his parents.

Jurel gives Pant fitness update

Jurel also provided an update on Pant after the latter was unable to take over wicketkeeping duties towards the end of the day’s play.

According to Jurel, Pant had taken a hit on his right shoulder and the team was closely monitoring his condition.

Jurel said he took over wicketkeeping because Pant’s shoulder was not in good condition and expressed hope that Pant would be fit the following day.
